I think about this often and wonder how we fare. One think to think about is how vast the Roman Empire was to manage and then how lax they got looking to make a Utopian society in some respects. Technology and moral values of today have lessened that gap- but have we drove the human factor of wanting more with less effort from our DNA? I think the last portion to be a better America could be rephrased as a different one. Better is in one's personal views and opinions. I am sure my father's generation felt we would ruin the world and it is still here to make a comparison answer. We label millennials as the me generation- but they thought the same of us and they will think the same of the next generation. Again- awesome question and one which requires mature thought and direction to answer. I remember the United States being a great leader with great men in office when it counted. We almost lost World War 2 at the beginning, but we came back and fought the enemy and won. This nation built more ships during the war than any other nation. Of course we had many ship yards to do this with. Today we have maybe two ship yards, one on each coast. Greed has taken away the ship yards and they moved overseas. Lower labor cost and no benefits. Today ships are so complicated it takes five years or more to build them, as compared to a year or less during WW2. Most of what we need need we depend on other countries to sell to us now. When war comes, and it is, we won't be able to manufacture fast enough, nor repair fast enough. To my way of thinking, the US has any import taxed. This should apply to US goods manufactured over seas, even if their home office is located here in the states. Maybe this may bring industry back to the states. {rewcious meteals needed by our industry is supplied by countries that are not our friends any more. They sell now, but when we go to war, they won't. We are in a very dangerous position right now. We are not self supported. We are too dependent on overseas trade. I am sure that the other services are just hurting just as badly as the Navy. As many commenters have said, the people do not seem to care to much right now. I do not want to get involved with the Washington arena and how they are hurting this country. Enough said on that. What scares me, there are no great leaders today as during World War 2. If there are, then their hands are tied by bureaucrats in Washington. We who have served in better times know what this nation can be. We all can only pray for better leaders than what we have. GOD help us to become what we were that we can mean something again for the world.
