Done under a different motivation, at a different time, and through the correct channels (IDK, maybe the state legislature?)...I might be "for" this. As it stands, this is just another attempt to inflame tensions for political gain.

I am torn on this. If he was renaming it to something new I absolutely would be against it.

In one way the intent is to honor the natives of the region by reverting to their own name for the mountain. I support this. The problem however, is that it has been known as Mt McKinley for so long that it will not be changed immediately, or maybe ever, in maps, records, etc. And then of course the seeming "slam" against Ohio. Now really, I don't think that part is as important as being made out, but I also understand the frustration.

Yes, it had a name long before it was renamed. Not only that but this is what the people from Alaska want it to be named. This doesn't bother me and no one should be offended.

First of all does he even have the right to do this? Second of all what does this have to do with global warming and third what is the purpose of doing this?
Denali was the name given to this mountain by the native Indian tribe of Athabasca who were native to Canada and Southwest United States.
Just exactly what is he trying to prove?

When the Russian owned this territory, they gave it a name...after the US took over, the US gave it a name...

Why can't obarfma just leave things alone? WHY is obarfma ALL of the Suddenly wanting to reach out and show concern and befriend the ALASKAN natives? What's he really up to?

I just wonder why all of a sudden decide to change the name of a mountain? Yes I know it was changed from the original Denali to McKinley for whatever reasons they had back when they did it.
I think for years to come many people will still call it Mt. McKinley. In the end I think its just another useless move of putting a check mark in the books as something accomplished.

People in Ohio are in a Tither I am sure both Republican and Democrat but there is Plenty of Other stuff named for the 8 Presidents from Ohio. One less thing is no biggy. All the Folks both Republican and Democrat in Alaska Love it and the Native American Community Love it. I understand why the Gold Prospector that named it, named it what he did. The whole hubbub is political.

It's political from the White House because the President is taking the opportunity to rename/restore the mountain for easy popular approval, especially with the locals whom he's visiting. *

It's political for the opponents of it because... well, you need to oppose things and this can be played for the hard core opposition who follows such things. **

It's political way-back-when because instead of the local name, it was named in honor of a President who... never went and presumably could have cared less.

Much of being President is about politics. It's not merely being C-in-C, or governing, but it's about standing up, making speeches, and drawing attention to X or less attention to Y. Whether you're a Democrat, Republican, Saint President Bush, Satan Worshipper President Bush, or similiar name associations with our current leader. It's what you DO. You build political capital this way.

* The President doesn't name places. That's the Secretary of the Interior. However, the SecInt is not the most highly visible position in the government (can you name the current one?). With the President making a rare trip to Alaska, and the huge microphone that comes with the Presidential Seal on a podium, it makes sense for President Obama to announce it. Further, much like a commander is in charge of or responsible for all that happens under the executive branch.

** Is this deserving an oppositional full-court press? No, and it's not getting that. However, in all political sides, there are those who listen occasionally and those who are hard-core devotees. The opposition here is for the latter... "See? We're opposed to yet another example of ...."

SSgt Alex Robinson I think if the people of the state of Alaska wanted to change the name of this mountain they should have taken care of it internally. If they're happy, I'm happy. What bothers me is that it seems to appear that it was mandated. I'm not sure why it would have taken an Executive order to accomplish this. Regarding why this happened it seems there is a trend with this Administration to accomplish as many "firsts" as possible.

It seems like a political move to increase the President's standing with the Alaskan natives. I really believe there are much important things to worry about then the name of a mountain. Personally, it never should have been named Mt. McKinley in the first place, it's not even near Ohio!
