It's for the betterment of my health, so it's an easy choice to make. Running, walking, using the elliptical machine or rowing on the machine, it's all good. I was obese. I got my arse kicked regularly. I took Judo. Didn't help. I started lifting weights. That helped. I was 13 then. I'm older than some mountain ranges now, and I still exercise almost daily. Now it's for health. They say if exercise were a pill it would be prescribed to everybody. Response by SPC John Waisman made Nov 8 at 2017 11:39 AM 2017-11-08T11:39:20-05:00 2017-11-08T11:39:20-05:00 CPT Chris Loomis 3074291

I do cardio three times a week rain sleet shine or snow.

I stay on a three day rotation of CrossFit.

Once a munch I toss on a backpack and do a six mile ruck march.

Honest. The thing is this, I’ve always been into fitness. But, more importantly, I’m on of those freaks of nature that went to OCS “at the last minute” for the age requirements. Many of the Soldiers I serve with, that depend on my leadership, are younger than I am. So, I need to keep myself fit in order to keep up with them. Response by CPT Chris Loomis made Nov 8 at 2017 11:41 AM 2017-11-08T11:41:42-05:00 2017-11-08T11:41:42-05:00 SGT Dave Tracy 3074328

I don't exercise as much as I used to; that said I am off to the gym pretty soon.

I was a gym-rat right out of high school. I wanted to put on muscle and weight, which I did. Within a 2 year period I went from 155lbs to 225. I didn't focus much on aerobic exercise as that wouldn't get me where I wanted to go like free weights did. After that, for the next several years, exercise was an on again, off again thing.

In the year prior to enlisting, I focused once again on the gym, but this time I fit in some aerobic workouts. After enlisting, the Army took care of my PT needs for a few years, then once back in the civilian world, I had to take the responsibility on myself as I was in the Reserves, so it was more running than I otherwise would choose for myself, but I still focused mainly on free weights.

Now that I'm no longer in the Reserves, my running is all but gone, but I still hit the gym. As before, I do it for me. Unlike before I'm not trying to bulk up; I'm just trying to maintain strength and overall health. Its enough motivation for me to do it a few times per week.
