Do you feel comfortable asking for military discounts/privileges?

I know this question, or similar questions, have been asked before but more specifically do you feel 'comfortable' asking? Personally, I do not feel comfortable asking for it. My wife gets mad at me for not asking but I feel that she won't understand where I'm comi ng from when I explain why I dont ask.

I view myself just like any other person. I dont feel special because of my profession and dont expect or demand discounts on clothes, food or other things. I'll gladly take a handshake and a "Thank you for your service" over handouts.

Wondering if any one else feels this way. And if not, how often and for what do you ask discounts for?

Unless I'm spending over 100$ I usually don't bother. Not because I'm afraid or uncomfortable but more that it isn't worth the headache unless you're spending a pretty penny.

SSgt Private RallyPoint Member I was discharged in 1972 and it has only been the last ten years that I have asked for military or senior citizen discounts. if they say no, that is fine and I still shop or eat there. Money is a limited resource, and if you can save ten percent on a purchase, it makes sense to do so. I obtain military discounts at Home Depot Depot, Lowe's, McDonalds, etc. Some companies want proof of service, so I show them my VA card. As long as you are polite and appeciate about the discount, you should not feel bad about asking for it.

I see nothing wrong with getting a free meal from TGI Friday's on Veterans Day, however, I won't go around asking for discounts everyday and for everyone to worship me as though I were a god just because I'm a Veteran.

Thank you all for your opinions. I agree with SPC Joseph Wojcik. I go for the free meals on Veterans Day too. I feel that's an appropriate time to ask/accept discounts.

If I see it listed, I take out my ID. I don't ask if they have one. If they offer it, I don't argue.

I personally don’t on my own,my wife will sometimes ask me to use it,she says that” They” at least owe me that,I know” They” don’t owe me anything ,my Service is a point of pride to me and has no debt owed.

I'll gladly take it if offered, but I don't really ask for it. I once worked with a guy who asked wherever we went and would almost throw a scene if a place said no. It got to the point that no one would even hang out with him.
