Do you feel the military should provide additional SGLI coverage for service members and their famlies?

I think the option should be available. Housing in different markets require a vastly huge mortgages.
Life insurance, in my opinion, should be able to pay the mortgage, burial, and leave some contingency funds for the disruption of normal life functions.

CPT Kit Lancaster, term life insurance is very inexpensive. It seems like it's one of the things that the government could provide that might produce significant benefits for comparatively small cost.

It's at 250,000, unless its raised since I got out. I know there is no price on a life, but there has to be a cap some where. It could raise to 500,000 and that still wouldn't be enough. It's going to happen. What we can do is pre-plan and make sure our families are the best prepared we can have them. We can make sure our family support plans are in order. We can make sure our wills are full and current. Make sure spouses know where all the important documents are. Don't ever deploy with out having a good sit down with your spouse and make sure he/she knows thing are. The best is if you have a friend or someone who knows their way around the military system to help out. I know casualty teams are sent out, but someone your family knows will help a bit.

Additional SGLI coverage to what amount? Spouses can now be insured up to $100k and the rates are exceptionally competitive for active duty (although the policies offered to retirees is much less attractive).

Comparatively, this is one of those benefit areas where service-members must be careful, as many (most?) civilian jobs do not offer anything of the kind.

Thank you for the responses. I believe it would be worthwhile for the military to allow members to by up additional SGLI. Depending on age and rank, $250-$500k is inadequate for the career veteran and their family.

I think the military should go back and readjust these life insurance programs for older vets because from 60 yrs old and up the premium is very expensive
