Now I reap the rewards of going balls to the wall and not getting fixed early. My advice; if you're hurt get attended to, so little things don't become big issues down the road. In fact going to medical insured that me service connected disabilities were properly documented while I was on active duty. I have a friend that has the exact same medical issue but it was not documented in his medical record on active duty. The VA has denied his claim, he lost the first appeal and is working on his second. Another point I would make is that you should not go through your time at any organization where you think people are just out to get you. I have found Navy Medical to be very professional and supportive. Deployed you don't really have a choice, unless something is broken or missing you go. Stateside I would only go if had something to do with... you know... I was on a ruck march and just as we were finishing I heard what sounded like a pop and I dropped to the ground. My NCO was like dude you're 50 ft from the end so I hobbled over and went to medical and turns out it was a distended testicle. Not much fun... I did catch a stomach parasite on deployment that messed me up pretty good. I wouldn't say I was toughing it out, but the symptoms onset was very gradual. It got so bad that I ended up starting to get ulcers. The parasite is gone, but I don't think my stomach will ever be the same. There's no reason to go to sick call for every bump or bruise, but if you're really hurt seek medical attention. Some injuries aren't going to heal on their own, regardless of how much motrin and ice you use. I'm in a job field now where I've seen people in their early 30s with the aches and pains of someone twice their age. Small, manageable injuries can lead to chronic pain and even disability down the line. I injured my knee 3years ago and was scared to be labeled “shxx bag” so I never got looked at. When my TL at the time forced me go to nothing was found that could be fixed surgically in 2014-16 I had MRIs and X-rays each year and was told the same thing, Do you want to suck it up or be MEB out? I pcsed and had another MRI and what do you know torn acl. If you are legitimately hurt take care of yourself because nobody else will care. Because I waited so long my acl tire and healed poorly now I’m 6 months post operation and can’t fully extend my knee.
