Even though I am Irish American, I am a huge fan of Princes Harry & William. Harry was in Colorado for Disabled Veterans games and coverage was spectacular. He seems like a soldier’s soldier. Did you know William piloted a C-17 back to the UK from KAF with the remains of a fallen British soldier? Bravo.
It’s inspiring to know that these Royals, the cream of Great Britain, put their nation first.
I’d remind members of what we heard 4 yrs ago from Presidential candidate ref his 5 sons National Service; “One of the ways my sons are showing support for our nation is helping to get me elected.” Response by MAJ Keira Brennan made Nov 2 at 2015 11:33 PM 2015-11-02T23:33:53-05:00 2015-11-02T23:33:53-05:00 Cpl Jeff N. 1084173

My wife is British and loves all things royal...Me, not so much.

First, Harry did not enlist in the British Army. He went to Sandhurst (Their West Point) and was commissioned. I believe he left the service as a Captain. He comes from an elite of the elite world and is given opportunities to do what ever he likes. Any road he wanted to take would have been paved and covered with rose petals for him.

The British Royals are one of the richest families in the world and have done so over generations off of the people of Great Britain. I like to call them the worlds most expensive welfare case. Do they serve a purpose. I guess. They have nothing buy ceremonial function and make people feel good (sometimes). If the Brits want to carry that expense to smile warmly from time to time, that is up to them.

He served because that is what all of the Royal men do. It is almost a requirement to serves for some period of time. Personally, he seems like a decent guy. He went where he didn't have to go (but for obvious reasons). The royal family dates back to the middle ages and perhaps even to the dark ages. Some were indeed villains with interesting names such as "The Black Prince" who was wasn't black by the way :-)
The British Royal family has vast resources and may well have served as the model for the wealthy families and estates of this nation which periodically open parts of the their holdings to the public to enjoy.
Centuries ago, the British Royal Family used to wield absolute power but now their functions and responsibilities are largely ceremonial.
Our own first family, namely the POTUS and direct family, require a vast amount of resources for housing, entertainment of foreign dignitaries, travel, security and communications, etc. Similar to Royal families our retired national leaders have reduced requirements but are still regarded as personages to be revered at public expense :-) Granted not everybody reveres each of the former Presidents; but, our tax dollars support their security, housing, etc. :-) Response by LTC Stephen F. made Nov 4 at 2015 10:58 AM 2015-11-04T10:58:16-05:00 2015-11-04T10:58:16-05:00 COL Charles Williams 1089018

No, I do not; did not, and do not because of this... I am over 3 years removed from the Army, and 7 years removed from combat... and I well-up regularly when I think about the losses my units sustained. I am actually kind of jealous of Harry. Not because he is a prince. Not because he is rich. Not because he will never NEED to have a real job (even though he volunteered to serve his country). No, I am jealous because despite all of that other stuff, he also gets to fly helicopters that have the capacity to blow shit up! I looked into learning to fly helicopters, but the $50,000 investment with no expectation of turning it into employment left me not doing so. So there a negative (ish) feeling about Prince Harry.
