RP Members and Connections Memorial Day is here. Please share your memories with us in a picture of those we honor and remember on this Memorial Day and those to come. This will be one of those questions that just keep giving us great memeories of those we've lost who served this great nation.

Here are pictures of my Father Donald Burroughs (Army Korean War Veteran) who passed on October 7, 2016, and my Father-in-Law Loren Leon Hazeldahl (Marine Vietnam Veteran) who died from suicide on December 8, 2015.

I have many more that I could add to this post and I will remember them in silence.

COL Mikel J. Burroughs, I've made this comment on similar discussion threads before, but the person I always think of never changes.
On Memorial Day, I always remember First Lieutenant Thomas Gary Sikes of Jacksonville, FL. Lieutenant Gary Sikes was a 1962 graduate of Robert E. Lee High School, Jacksonville, FL and 1967 graduate of Mercer University, Macon, GA.
Lieutenant Sikes was the 2nd Platoon Leader, of C Company, 5th Battalion, 46th Infantry Regiment (The Professionals), 198th Infantry Brigade, Americal (23rd) Division, United States Army Vietnam.
When Lieutenant Sikes gave his all in the Quang Ngai province of South Vietnam, he was only 23 years old, and he left a wife and a one month old son that he never even saw.
He is buried in Bowman, GA, and his name appears on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, DC at coordinates 36W 053.
He was my friend.

My father, Delbert Riley Jr.
born 11/4/1924
Died 5/6/1999
Dad joined the army August 1, 1940 and was assigned to Co H, 1st Armored Regiment, 1st Armored Division. He was a tanker, lost 5 tanks during the war, and rose to the rank of T-5. He was with the company until April 29, 1945. He was at Kasserine Pass and was awarded the Silver Star in Tunisia. He was my hero, my father, my friend. His brother Tom was in the Army Air Corp in the Pacific and his brother Pete was in the navy. I think of all of them and their friends who served with them.

My grandfather was a Naval gunner in WW2. He was assigned to man the guns on Merchant ships in the convoys. He had two hulls shot out from under him, and survived. He always joked that that's why he didn't buy lottery tickets - he'd used all his luck. He died in 2007. And my dad was a Riverine Sailor in Vietnam. He died in 2003.

CW3 Tania Nichole Dunbar; after returning from Kuwait she passed away 19 July 2015 in North Carolina. My mentor and one of the most strongest women I've ever had the joy to ever know. Married with two children, most known as a Soldier who believed in the battle-buddy system like it's no joke, a family woman, someone who lead with no nonsense and hated crying from others. She is also more commonly known as one of the most prolific and strongest women who fought for the LGBT Military Community, never stopped her work and is loved by many whose lives were touched by her words of hope, affirmation, strength and resiliency. I wouldn't be here today without her. I wouldn't have started taking care of myself without her. I wouldn't be the leader and Soldier if not for her talks and her strength to push forward no matter what.

I miss you Chief, and I'm sorry for crying. One beer for you.

My grandfather, then LT Frank B. Clements, USA. He passed away when I was very young, so I have little memory of him, only the stories. Also my "step-grandfather", Jesse Johnson, who I do remember (and I know he was awarded two Bronze Stars and received the Purple Heart from campaigns in Okinawa and the Philippines). Sadly I have no photo of my other grandfather. All three part of the Greatest Generation.

COL Mikel J. Burroughs My first memory is Lieutentant Commander Eric Allen Cranford, USN. He was one of those killed at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. My wife Marsha worked with Eric's wife Emily at the ManorCare Nursing Home in Fair Oaks, Virginia.

My father entered the army at the age of 31 a few weeks after Japanese aircraft dropped bombs on the U.S. Navy ships in Pearl Harbor. He served in the South Pacific on the Islands of Okinawa, Saipan
and Iwo Jima. As a young boy I looked up to my father as my personal hero and a man I wanted to be like when I became a adult. When he passed away I lost my father and my best friend.

1. My dad was WWII Infantry, Korean War Forward Observer, and Cold War Air Defense Missle Command. He retired from the Army in 1969 and passed away last year aged 92.
2. My Father-in-law was USMC, a Pearl Harbor Survivor, badly wounded in the Pacific Theater, and spent 2 years in occupied Japan after the war. He was in for seven years, and passed away on Christmas Day, 2008.
3. My older brother joined the Army while a military dependent overseas in Taiwan in 1967. He spent four years in the Army as a Radar Repairman, and he passed away (suicide) in 1988. He is the boy in the center (Top) family pic.

Memorial Day can be a bad day for me if I let the demons out of their cage. So I do things to remind myself that those I lost would be real pissed if I spiral down. So I always remember Ralph, who after I lost him, has spent my lifetime kicking my ass to do the right thing. I wouldn't be honoring him if I didn't. So Ralph, here's to you and the countless others.

The was my Dad. A WWII Navy Veteran who went on to be the father of 14 children of which I'm the youngest. I can't begin to express what an amazing man he was. I miss him more than anything.

COL Mikel J. Burroughs, I’d like to remember my father also, although he was not a casualty of war. My father, Jack Curlee (ENS-LTJG) served in the U.S. Navy from JUL43 to JUN46 during WWII and spent much of that time in the Pacific Ocean on USS LST-78. He was an excellent father and husband. He was a quiet, genteel man, and a true gentleman. I’m glad he was my father.
He died 10SEP15 at the age of 93. Requiescant in pace patris mei.

I caption this picture as 2 sets of brother. My brother on the far right, Dad in the middle, and his brother right in front of him. He has been stationed in Luxembourg since Jan 7 1945.
Also have Dad's Brother Vern, WWII, AAF, died of brain cancer in 1978. Dad's brother Bill was killed in a train accident just before WWII. Uncle Ed was in WWII as a Marine, he died of a car accident in 1955. Ed's son, who we call Uncle Jake, died 6 weeks ago. He flew in 168 combat missions in a C-121 snoop plane in Vietnam. My Dad, Brother and I, all retired Air Force. That spans Korea, Vietnam, El Dorado Canyon, Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Johnson's have served, but we have run out of men to continue.

Life long friend of over 50 years, Russ Fitz of Duncan Falls OH. US Army WWII Battle of the Bulge, got out opened a gas station on the corner and spent the rest of his life doing what that generation did to make America Great.

My Dad, PFC Victor T, Kemp, went ashore in Normandy with 2nd Infantry Division, D Day +4, and fought to Reims. Twice wounded. Purple Heart & CIB. Died 1994 at age 83.
My Father-in-Law, PFC Harry Pat Brooks was slated for the mainland Japan invasion force when Truman dropped the bomb. Walked around Ground Zero at Nagasaki. Died 2013 at age 86.

The Officer beside me died 2002. We served two deployments to Vietnam he was the XO of the USS Hancock CVA-19. He retired as the highest decorated Admiral in Naval history. Admiral H.S. Mathews, Jr. He will live in my heart forever. Salute

On Memorial Day, we remember the fallen in our country's service. My uncle, Daniel Villaneva Hermosillo, died when the USS Bache (DD-470) was hit in the last Kamikaze attack on a US Ship in WWII. His mother, my grandmother, was so distraught that she did not allow my mother to ever mention his name. I did not find out about him until after my mother's passing a few years ago. Like so many lost in WWII, his heroic sacrifice is what we remember on Memorial Day.

RIP to my Great Uncle Kenneth May SSgt. USAAC, KIA 03/06/1944. In the air crew photo top row, 2nd left to right standing. Not positive but this is at least part of the crew he flew with and are all in a communal grave, Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis Mo.

My father, Sergeant Major W.E. Leake. He retired after 32 years of service to the Corps. He did 2 tours in Vietnam as an 0311. Agent Orange claimed his life on 25 Nov. 2009.

I lost my Dad last year, and my uncle a couple of years before that. They were WWII era, and WWII, vets, respectively. My wife's first love, Charles Conover, was killed in Vietnam. I lost friends, acquaintances, and home unit members in Afghanistan. I remember them all today.

My uncle, Aviation Radioman 3rd Class William Eugene Greenfield, sometime in 1942/43.
He was assigned to US Navy Fleet Air Wing 7 (FAW-7), Bombing Squadron 110 (VB-110), in England, aboard PB4Y-1 (B-24) Liberator bombers in an anti-submarine role. On March 12, 1944, he and the entire crew of 10 went MIA off the coast of Cherbourge, France. He was declared KIA a year later.
My Dad’s parents kept all of the letters the Navy Chaplain, Commanding Officer, as well as the War Department sent them, which I now have, along with his Air Medal and other uniform items. Kind of keeps me grounded.
Along with my uncle, the following U.S. Naval personnel were lost:

My grandfather was in both the US Navy (CPO) and USAF (Army Air Corps) and served in WWII and the Korean War. Here is a photo of him entering Seoul Korea. He passed away in 2012 at the ripe old age of 97. Thank you for your sevice Papa!

Shirley F Sutherburg

October 24, 1923 ~ May 19, 2018 (age 94)

Shirley Frederick Sutherburg, 94, died peacefully at his home in Jefferson on May 19, 2018.

Born October 24, 1923, in Durham, Maine, to John Frederick Sutherburg and Beatrice Merrill Richardson Sutherburg. He grew up in the Newcastle and Pittston areas.

Even as a young boy, Shirley was a hard worker. Along with family chores, he was hired to work as a farmhand. He worked long hours chopping wood, haying, milking cows and caring for the farmer’s animals.

Shirley joined the Army at the age of 17, just before World War II began. He served in the South Pacific Theater from 1940 to 1945. Shirley had a variety of positions, including cook and machine gunner. He also did some boxing as a private earning the respect of the men he served with. He had two brothers in the same outfit, Russell and Walfred. Walfred, just a year older than Shirley, decided that he wanted to be a paratrooper and soon transferred out of their outfit. Walfred was injured and sent to a field hospital, where a booby-trapped heating stove exploded killing him and many others. This was extremely hard for Shirley as they were very close growing up.

Shirley was injured in battle receiving shrapnel wounds in his leg. As a result of his wounds, he received an Honorable Medical Discharge. He also did a stint in the Marines during the Korean War as an instructor, also receiving an Honorable Discharge.

After being discharged, Shirley came back to Maine to build a life for himself. He married, started a family and worked at several different jobs. He worked at the Gardiner Winery, was a milk man, coached little league, was a cook at Togus for a few years and operated a small store with a taxicab stand. Then he moved to Colorado for five years where he worked as a construction foreman, then as a miner in the Climax Molybdenum Mine at Leadville, Colorado.

Upon moving back to Maine, he went to work at the Brunswick Naval Air Station, staying there for 27 years. When he retired, Shirley drove school bus for both, Somerville and Jefferson Schools for 12 years before retiring again.

Shirley was predeceased by three children, Lana Williams, Kevin Sutherburg, and Dean Sutherburg, brothers Russell H., John F. Jr., Walfred F., Bruce M., Roderick V, and Byron W., sisters Frieda Buckley, Lucretia Hassan, Laurine Grover, Geraldine Hassan.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Elaine Adams Sutherburg, sons Tommy Sweetzer, Walfred Sutherburg and wife Laura, Lyman Sutherburg, Lee Sutherburg, Kurt Sutherburg and Wife, Michelle, daughters Sandra Wallace, Karen Deuso and Dawn Amey, brother Terrance and wife Dianne Sutherburg, sister Roberta Humason. There are also, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

My Dad, T-4 James Potter 24th Inf. Div. Manila Philippine Islands, 1945. Was drafted in 1944 while he was a senior in High School. Did not graduate High School until 1946. Went on to college at Murray State in Murray KY. Died in July 1972. (sitting on the hood)

My grandfather CPL Wayne Dale Allred, 26th AAA AW BN (SP), 1953-55, Quad-50 gunner. Died in '85 when I was 2. I was already branched Air Defense when I found out he was a quad-50 gunner in the Anti-Air Artillery in Korea. Now I really have to listen to my NCOs in Air Defense since he WAS one.

In the boonie cover is Sgt Zachary Jasper (Cpl at the time photo was taken). He took his own life not long after I rotated out of Okinawa. Never guessed he'd have been one to do it. We'd been through MOS School and our first units together; more or less. Most motivated Marine I've ever met.

My Dad, SSG Harry Reiter, was born on 12/6/1919 and passed on 10/15/2003. He enlisted in 1941 before the onset of WWll and was discharged in May, 1945. He was a medical corpsman in the US Army Air Corps and assigned to the 11th Air Force in Alaska. He was also assigned to the Defense of Alaska. When he was returned back to the lower 48, he was assigned to various military hospitals and rehabs caring for the injured and wounded.

My father was a WWII pilot. Flew mostly cargo and ferries. Went with the Air Force when it became a separate branch. Killed in a crash in Dharan, Saudi Arabia in 1956, just after my 4th birthday. He was 36.

My late Father in Law Salvatore LaMacchia who was a SSgt in the US Army in WWII. He had come ashore via landing craft on three separate Japanese held Islands including both Guam and Okinawa. We had a great relationship and He had even told Me some things that He hadn't even shared with My Mother in Law. I don't compare MY experience with some of the things He had to do in WWII combat but it seems He felt comfortable talking with Me as a Viet Nam Veteran about some of those things which He never told anyone else. I do miss Him, He was a good man and someone that I could look up to. He was buried with Military Honors and three of His Four son in Laws were Veterans of the Armed Forces although I was the only one in a combat zone. I still think of Him often.

Unfortunately I can’t find the picture I had of my dear friend SGT Christian Friedman; he left us all to early after taking his own life a little over 3 years ago. He suffered from PTSD and other medical problems after his second deployment to the Middle East.

This is the only photo I have of him. 3rd bench from the left, first person. We met in BCT at Fort Benning, different platoons but same company. We always got stuck on CQ duty together somehow. He killed himself after being outed as bisexual, MPs came and interrogated him and freaked him out so badly that he just decided to end it rather than go home with that on his record. A few years later and nobody would've cared.
