RallyPoint seems to be a great place to share our stories and pictures. I have seen and responded to first and last pictures in uniform discussion which were focuses on each of us. I would like to see pictures of us with our comrades in arms. I hope you will join me in sharing pictures of yourself with others in uniform.
Three pictures of me with friends - Top winter at Grafenwoehr in 1982 (2) graduation day at West Point on May 28, 1980, (3) attending a post-graduation wedding in dress blues for the first time in June 1980 with my two best friends; (4) Postcard of company formation at West Point in 1978. I am in the front row 2nd from the left.
I request that you add some information about the picture [where, when, who and what] when you post a picture.

[Caveat - In the West Point Graduation picture the brand new 2LT in the middle is not making an obscene gesture. His middle finger has a band aid/surgical tape just below the tip of his finger. I can't remember if he was still wearing a splint or not that day.]

LTC Stephen F., here's a photo that I've always liked. I took the photo so I'm not in it. It was JUL-AUG70. We had returned from SF Phase 1 at Camp Mackall and were attending the Weapons NCO Supervisor Candidate Special Forces Course at Fort Bragg, NC. Some of us would become light weapons specialists and some of us (like me) would become heavy weapons specialists.
We’re all wearing green berets with only the De Oppresso Liber DUI. At the time, SFTG allowed this wear of the beret upon successful completion of Phase 1.

I'll go with this one from Antarctica way. Looks like we're loaded up with marker flags to lay out a route. We'd drag a 250 foot rope with a rag on it and that was the spacing for which every one had to be drilled in. We'd shift around as at say -40, your butt numbed up pretty quick. I'm on the right. The guy in the lighter coveralls "won the raffle". I'd have a spare seat so would take someone along for the traverse. Few people ever get out of town and my job had me outside most of the time. Based on the load out, it looks like a run from McMurdo to Marble Point, about 60 miles away. We'd take two tracked vehicles with sleds, Scott Tent, preway heater, survival gear, generator, drills, etc. One vehicle would hang at the flag and when the rope end passed, we'd double click the mic on VHF for the next one. When a butt got numb, the vehicles would trade places. We'd also set up core monitoring locations to check the ice thickness over the season. The reason for the flags besides cargo runs is the Hueys could drop low in a near whiteout and follow the bread crumbs back to base.

Here's one I know you'll like LTC Stephen F., for the location alone! This photo was taken during REFORGER 84 at a Bavarian gasthaus in the cold war Federal Republic of Germany, SEP84 timeframe. The sergeant first class to the left is now deceased, God rest his soul.
I was HHC Commander, 15th Psychological Operations Battalion, and we were attached to the Plans Division, G3, of VII U.S. Corps, headquartered at Kelley Barracks in Stuttgart.

Here are a few pictures from Reforger 1981 while I was assigned to 1st BN 52nd Infantry in Warner Kassern at Bamberg, West Germany. Since you posed a Reforger picture I thought it made sense to post some LTC Stephen C.
That year we were controllers for Reforger. Here is a picture of my driver SP4 Sims, one of the M151 jeep we used; a picture of what I purchased at the Bäckerei [bakery] and Metzgerei [butcher shop], and a picture of an AH-1 Cobra and OH-58 - West of Giessen, Germany. That was one thing I enjoyed about being stationed in Germany was the fresh breads and meats we could easily purchase from the local towns. In March 2003, LTG Chuck Mahan came to visit me while I was recovering from complications in my mitral valve surgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He chastised me for try to get up. Then he told my wife she could call him Chucky while I had to call him sir. My wife stayed with me the three weeks I was in Walter Reed.
LTG Mahan speaks fluent Spanish and he spoke to my Cuban wife in Spanish.

At top is a picture of me at Walter Reed Army Medical Center with an ICU nurse after they realized I had not lost significant brain function during my mitral valve repair surgery on March 11-12, 2003.
I still had all the tubes up my nose and in my mouth and I wrote that I wanted to play charades since I couldn't talk.
Other pictures: me with the team of nurses who assisted me as I walked around the ward with the machines attached to me. Me with the chief of cardiothoracic surgery COL Phil.

Underway on nuclear power, somewhere deep in the North Atlantic, 1987. I'm standing Fire Control Technician Watch (sitting down) and watching a contact. IC2 Bloemankamp (next to me) is double checking my fire control settings. MM3 Akins is standing behind me resetting an alarm during his roving watch. LT Grimes (standing up to the right) is on the Conning Station and is the Officer Of The Deck watch. He has leaned over to follow the progress of our tracking. The sub's SONAR system is slaved into my fire control gear so I see what SONAR see's. All the "shooting" would be done from my seat. I am facing Starboard (Right). Behind me and forward would be the helmsman/planesman who dive and drive the submarine.

Where are your birth control glasses? You are the only Soldier in the picture without them. I had been in units early in my career that the BC glasses were the only ones we could wear in the field. Still have a pair of the old black frame BC's.

The other pic is at 911 observances in NYC that I go to every year. My brothers boss, Fire Marshal Ronald Bucca was killed in the WTC and we honor his memory every year. My twin brother is to my left, the Army colonel was the last Army commander at Camp Bucca in Iraq and he turned it over to the Marine colonel who is in the picture with us. The Colonel and i were in the same military police unit but I did not meet him until 911.

Below are three photos from my deployment aboard the USS Forrestal CVA-59, three of us on liberty at the Enlisted Men's Club, Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Norfolk, Virginia, 1956, when I was an enlisted man. After an additional 8 years of school, I returned to active duty as a Dental Officer in the U. S. Navy Dental Corps. The Forrestal was the quintessential duty station in the U. S. Navy. Our association wanted to buy the ship and convert it into a national museum. We had raised several million dollars to buy it but Obama nixed that deal and sold it to a Texas wrecking yard for one dollar. Obama is not our best buddy.

Here's one on green ramp Ft Bragg (technically Pope AFB) waiting for a jump. My buddy and I used to brown camo to cover our noses then went around to all the NCO's and our Lt. telling them how we thought they were the best ever. How about a Senior Master on the flight line in charge of operations and having a Airman, WHO WAS NOT QUALIFIED, give ground instructions to taxing HH-53s. The Airman directed two HH-53's into a ground mishap that destroyed two rotor heads, damaged a KC-135 on the ground near by and nearly killed the crew chief of the 135 aircraft. A few months later the Senior was promoted to Chief Master. I knew this person and can assure you he had a charmed military life.

My first active duty mission. I was title 32 active duty for operation Noble eagle in Utah. We were at dugway Proving Ground. Here I was having fun with a M249 saw. I was a first lieutenant back then. I was part of task force Caesar during operation Noble Eagle 3 . I was in the area where some of you used to do ranger training in the desert phase.. I was in charge of a mortar platoon that was change to do gate physical security or be the quick reaction force.

The friend name Mark became a police officer. In the mid-1990s, God used him to recognize my Alzheimer's-stricken mom who had walked a couple miles from home in Upper Darby, PA. He brought her home to my dad.

This scruffy bunch is the last crew at Cape Christian LORAN. At the time this was taken, most of us had been therefor close to a year having wintered over 500 miles North of the Arctic circle. The closest we got to visitors was the occasional Inuit from the nearby village and on occasion talking to a stewardess a few miles up on a trip to or from Europe while on watch. We were the last station they could check in with before/after Iceland. Oh I'm in the back row, between the big burly guy and the tall skinny PO2 just left of the center.

There really aren't that many photos with me in them, or at least ones that I ever got a hold of a copy. Normally, I was the one running the camera.

Anyway, the first one here is my Platoon towards the end of my second deployment to Iraq on 2006/2007. Good group of guys, and good photo even though it's missing a couple who were transferred elsewhere to fill gaps. 2nd is from some middle-of-the-night huddle around the fire barrel outside the TOC; vehicles prepped & waiting for our rollout time to arrive.

The third is the only group photo I've found from my first deployment (2003/2004). Somewhere I have a photo album with more, but it's currently MIA - and that bothers me. Lots of good memories in the photos from my time in the Army.

Thank GOD I have tons of photos and slides- my youngest son converted all my slides to a CD. Carried a Kodak Pony 35 MM all the times that I could. I pull the old album down now and then and relive memories, the best time was sharing my orders and photos with my Cadet grandson who has already enlisted as a sophomore at Texas A&M and was just awarded the German Proficiency Badge which he is allowed to wear on his uniform when he enters as 2nd Lt. Needless to say I am very proud of this young man.

Ending up the only "sea duty" I had after over 20 years in the Air Force. I was lucky enough to be sent as the US rep from Thule Air Base to visit several of the villages in Greenland. I'm the short, slightly plump Lt Col in the front row, next to the young and fit SF Airman. The US contingent was rounded out with the base Chaplain in the back row. My good friend Kim, the Danish Liaison Officer is next to the captain on the right. The rest are the patient, courteous, and perfectly wonderful crew of the HDMS Ejnar Mikkelsen.

Unrep operation aboard the USS Guadalupe (AO-32) refueling the USS Oriskany (CVA 34). I was a Naval Sea Cadet and was only on board the USS Guadalupe for a week. I stood watch in the Radio Shack under the guidance of RM3 Johnson. The ship's commander was a Captain Barnes. This happened from April 4th to April 9th 1971. The refueling operations (there were several) took place in the area off the coast of Southern California. I later joined the US Army in 1972.

Good to see you got out of there LTC Stephen F. I didn’t have any photos of me from when I got my Head Injury and after when hospitalized .. There were some but some head’s thought it might give me ptsd or s’thing related.. ..S’body gave an excuse we were in a secured area(flightline).. Seriously ? And I gave them a eyeroll... I got told that was uncalled for.. (hey.. I may do or say s’thing
Out-of-line, I got a TBI...). At least I had a sense of humor.. I kept a notebook, so when questions I wanted to ask cane up,
I’d write them and then ask them later..
A Sister Nurse at the Univ. N. Dakota hospital got me the note book and a pen..
I got returned to the field hospital at Grand Forks (it was small and not set up for Trauma like I had.. well maybe temporarily.. After I got back my notebook disappeared .. I got it back later.. they told me they wanted me to remember more and hold my thoughts more.. redevelop my memory process’g..
More.. A nurse gave it back to me .. I might have a few s’where, I’ll have to search.. I had one at UND hospital(a student nurse) she visited me several times at Grand Forks.. got me out of that
Hospital for walks outside.. those were some of the best physical therapy..
I missed her after I got Air-evacced to Scott AFB.. I had got her address.. when I was at Scott AFB Hospital I was at Base CBPO and got some Officer info about being a nurse in the AF and sent it to her.
I got a letter about a month later from S’body at UND saying they forwarded the package to her. So I wrote them back and thanked them., So then they wrote me back again.. ah-h-h another pen-pal !
Got a few more letters.. then I got a form letter from UND... address’g me by my rank and to stop communicating with nurse students.. got another from her friend.. told me to ignore that official letter.. she told me she had a off campus address(enclosed) so Mail would go to off campus post office.. nice.. I asked her if she had thought to be a Military Nurse..
(I might have a TBI but I can still do what I can to bring people into our big AF family)
I know Recruit’g.not my job, but we are our Service’s ambassadors. I tried directing her to see the on campus Military Recruiter.. They sent her a bunch of nurse stuff.. The wrong stuff.. it was Navy Nurse Corps. What the ? I suppose it really didn’t matter. I thought it’d of been nice to see one or both in AF Uniforms one day.. after awhile I didn’t hear from the 2d nurse anymore either.. I hoped they found their way to become AF nurses..,well one of them anyway..

The first photo is me re-enlisting in 1985 on top of my AN/MSQ-103, flanked by my roommate, SP4 Carey Veteto and being sworn in by 1LT John Sicilia. The second was taken in 2011 at BATUS in Canada. I was chaplain to 4th Rgt Royal Artillery, British Army. We were were holding a memorial service for LBDR Paul Dewhurst, killed on that spot 20 years earlier in a training accident. His brother was the CSM at this memorial.

I am not in either picture but I thought they were great. I dont remember who took the picture of the kid but I aways thought it was hilarious that kid is smoking like he is 30 years old. However, times are hard in Afghanistan.

Notice the picture of the grass is simply grass in a box. Last tour over there, my wife sent me a bag of soil, and grass seeds. One of the guys stole a keep of the grass sign and stuck in there, I thought it was very appropriate. Almost instantly the grass became a place for guys to smoke, or just decompress a bit. After it was there for a week or so, several different guys would check on it, water it if it needed watering. Rarely was a time day or night someone was not standing or sitting by the grass.. It was almost some kind of therapy. I would send my wife pictures of the grass all the time with little updates.

This is a picture of a giant tree we had to remove in order to widen Hwy # 1 in Vietnam. It was so huge it was too large to cut with saws so we blew it down piece by piece with C-4 and detonating cord. Some of the civilians got upset with us and I did not understand why until the village chief told me his people believe their ancestors live in the trees so they worship the large trees.

My last trip over, the boss told me as the S3 I should have a vehicle, he said I/the section might need it. He was shocked when I picked that ole truck. Needless to say it did not have a good stereo. I not only did not have doors, windows, air conditioner, a roof, windshield but no seat belts. Well it had the belt part but no buckles, so if I had to go to the airfield I threw the belt across my waist. The Boss ask me if I was sure and I smiled and said that is exactly what vehicle my section needed.

Back post Ft Campbell, 1976. It was so cold the night before that orders were sent to the rear to take the Bn Bulldog mascot inside. Couldn't get air movement back to post because of a limit on blade time, had a full infantry co standing in the rear of a 2 1/2 truck @ 15 mph due to wind chill to get us back to main post that day. It was a mite chilly. The safety pin looking thing is an M-60 ammo bag that I carried shaving stuff in. Hung it on a branch the night before, and just the humidity froze it that stiff

LTC Stephen F. This was my boot Camp Company Graduation photo May 1967 Great Lakes Illinois, Company 166 Engineman Chief Petty Officer Rebstock, Company Commander. He was one old tough and mean southern boy with wrinkles in his neck that you could lose a quarter in and a Korean war and Vietnam war vet! I will remember him to my dying day! To find me look in the top left corner, I am the first person in the third row down from the top left corner! 51 years ago! From here. I went on to serve for 23 years from E-1 to E7 (CPO) then on to full Commissioned officer as a CWO2, and retired as a CWO-3!

This is January 1969 in Bulldog Hall at Fort Polk, LA. I'm the one with the poorly drawn green arrow above my head. I had Basic and AIT here at Fort Polk. 1 week of "Zero" week (clothing/equipment/barracks, administrative) followed by 8 weeks Basic and 8 weeks AIT.

When I left my second wife for cheating on me after 20 years of faithful marriage on my part I threw all that I love myself stuff in the trash. My blues. My suits. My bowling trophy's. Etc. Packed my suitcase with all it would hold. Plus, of course my golf clubs. Sent my Lexus 2008 400h back to the us and my daughter got 20000 cash. Gave my wife 50k and said good bye. She spent it in six months. She had a dutch lawyer call me and said she deserves 3600 euro's. I told the lawyer I am an official resident of Florida and committing adultry is a felony. We had no children. She did me a favor. Did you now that Limburg Provence is where 90 percent of ice is produced. The dutch have a serious drug problem. Not just pot. I lived in the netherlands for 30 years and never smoked pot.

Yes I have a few , here are some from "Return of forces to Germany , a deployment exercise we went through from our home base Ft Carson Colorado to Germany , where we drew a field artillery battalion equipment from moth balls and deployed all under simulated chemical attack . 36 hours of non stop go with no sleep . We were a battalion aid station and these were my troops , in my mind the best group of guys . 1/29th FA 1981-82 .

Friends gathered behind our tent for lunch at Camp Evans in RVN in 1968; the vertical structure is our shower, the concertina wire was erected by the engineer company behind us to keep us out of their area (it didn’t work... we were Infantry, and trained to penetrate such obstacles. We went through it dragging a long extension chord behind us in order to steal electrify from their generators.)

This was taken at my retirement ceremony. After 26 years, 6 months, 29 days, it was time to go. I was lucky enough to have my older brother Lt Col (Major then) Trent Klug as my retirement officer. It was an honor to have him there. Also in the photo on the far left is my younger brother Scott. Scott didn't serve, but probably had the hardest job of all of us. He is a High School Science teacher, and has been for 30+ years.

Doesn't qualify as in uniform, but records the only time I ever met one of the hundreds I medevaced in Vietnam. On the left is Jeff Cessna of Liberty Mo. Jeff lost his lower leg when a village he was in was overrun in 1970. I went to see him at his business, Papa's Coffee Express in Liberty last summer. Highly recommend stopping by if you're in the area.

1976 Graduated from Chico State College with BA in Recreation Administration. Enlisted in the USAF active duty on a bet and basic training at Lackland AFB, TX. My first and favorite career field was Weather Observer after a 14 week tech school at Chanute AFB. Orders to Hill AFB, Ogden UT in 1976. The 388th Tactical fighter wing of F-4s just relocated to Hill from VietNam. The sound of freedom. Who doesn’t love the sound of an F-4 at full throttle. 1979 Officer training school Lackland AFB, Rodney squadron. I was the "guide -on-line” during our parades on Saturdays. Remind me never to put “needs of the air force on a dream sheet!” Did I get a cushy job at the base gym handing out towels? NO. My room mate with a degree in history got that job. I got orders to Tyndall AFB for air defense training as a weapons controller (GCI). Ft. Lee AFS. Hopewell, VA at the 20th NORAD Region Air Division welcomed me. Alpha Crew callsign Fertile 75 - not welcoming one of 18 new 2LT and I was a “mustang" butter bar lieutenant (prior enlisted) woman. Married a USAF F-15 maintenance officer in 1980 stationed at Langley AFB, VA. Air force’s idea of a joint spouse was to send me to White Sands, NM and hubby F-15 maintenance officer to Kadena AB. Made Captain in July 1983 8-months pregnant and off active duty in 1983 transferred to USAF reserve cat H to Kadena AB, Okinawa 1983-85 Liaison officer for the USAF Academy. Long story now shortened, retired in 1999 from Robins AFB, GA as aUSAF reserve Captain with 4000 points then waited 12 years before getting my Military pay at age 60.

My brother-in-law and me at Di An, Vietnam, April, 1970. Doug was on a mortar track with the 11th Armored Cav and they came in for a stand down. I was in the 604th Trans. Co. at Camp Holloway outside of Pleiku, about 300 miles north of Di An. My CO gave me a 3-day pass to get there and back. I made it by hopping Huey rides round trip. I'm in the glasses. Geez ... look like I'm 13 (was 19).

STABO Exercise at Scbofield Barracks, 1976

While serving as editor of the "Tropic Lightning News" for the 25th Inf. Div. in Hawaii, I decided to do a story about training the Scout Plt. in CSC, 1-5th Inf., was doing at Schofield's East Range Training Area.

One of the most interesting was stabilized body extraction (STABO) by helicopter. The STABO technique was developed by Green Berets in Vietnam for quick extraction from the jungle when there were no landing zones available. It involved the use of a cut-down parachute harness and a 120-foot length of nylon rope. On this day, I was paired with CPT Cole Kingseed, CO of CSC, 1-5th. The first shot shows me undergoing an equipnmebnt check after putting on the harness. (2) I'm preparing to attach the ends of my rope to the shoulder straps on the harness. (3) The instructor signals the pilot that we're good to go. (4) CPT Kingseed reels me in for the flight after we're airborne. (5) the Huey heads off for Oahu's North Shore and climbs to about 1,400 feet. We continued around the North Shore past the Kahuku Training Area and turned around when we reached Laie (site of the Mormon Temple and Polynesian Cultural Center) and then flew back to East Range. What a rush! We were dangling together beneath the chopper racing along at 110 knots 1,400 feet above the coastline. The flight took half an hour. (5) Here we are landing back at East Range.

(6) A couple of weeks later I attended the 25th Div. NCO Academy's Advanced Leadership Course (a three-week precursor to today's ANCOC for promotable E-5s and E-6s. I am shown here receiving the course's two top awards: Distinguished Honor Graduate and the Leadership Award.

Post-Script: In the fall of 1990 I encountered CPT Kingseed again when he joined the History Dept. faculty at West Point as a colonel with a Ph.D. I was a major teaching advanced sections of the History of the Military Art (covering Greco-Roman times to the present) and had just completed my own doctorate at Temple University in Philadelphia that May. I had been at USMA since May of '88, arriving after 21 months of grad school at Temple with MA in hand and ABD status at Temple.

How's this one? Military Honor Guards were invited for the opening night after the Bruins won the Stanley Cup in 2010. We were given souvenir hockey sticks and escorted the Trophy out on the ice. As a retiree bugler, I am a member of the Maine USAF Honor Guard. It's great to still be considered useful.

One of my biggest regrets is not taking more pictures with my friends and during my deployments, especially when I’m telling stories about them. Some of those guys are gone and the places unattainable so being able to put a face to the name and landscape would be memorable to the family I think.

Skiing was a huge influence in our off-duty lives for several of us. I had met Art Clark and Dennis Breton, former ski racers for the University of Maine. Art was a single soldier, Dennis was married and lived “off-post” with his wife Dru. Theirs was another “respectable” refuge from the Army. I spotted a notice in the Army news announcing a ski race to be held in the German Alps above Garmisch. The US Army operated a recreation center with several hotels and a ski area in Garmisch, a quaint village nestled at the foot of the Zugspitz, Germany’s highest mountain at 10,000 feet. The race was to be held on the “Plat” – the Zugspitz glacier at about 8,000 feet reached by a mountain train to the Schneefernerhaus hotel perched on a precipitous side of the mountain overlooking the glacier. Getting off the train in the hotel basement, we could do a Tuckerman Ravine headwall run from the hotel to the Plat. Some years later, there was a landslide over the hotel from the Zugspitz summit that killed several on the deck, it was that steep. Art and I stayed in the Green Arrow Army Hotel, took the mountain train and entered the race. We placed and were awarded engraved silver shot glasses. The day was fabulous for us skiers used to New England hard pack skiing and much lower mountains. Besides, there was zither music, beer and yummy German food on the decks of those mountain hotels and huts. We were on a high that came crashing down when we returned to base. We had been gone 3 days without a proper pass. It was our break but we were not allowed to be further away than 30 miles from base (Garmisch was 180 miles) AND had to be on-base nightly for bed check. Usually, especially on weekends, nobody checked and our buddies covered for us. We were caught and there was talk of courts martial for AWOL. Oops. I don’t know who thought of it but our Colonel was a fanatic about his unit’s sports teams and had a large trophy cabinet outside his office that he showed off to his Colonel buddies when they visited. In any case, when quizzed by the race organizers who we were, we made up a Ski Team name – the 507th Ski Bums. I checked in with the Colonel’s clerk to make an appointment to “present” our trophies on behalf of the Ski Team. Well, let me tell you, the Colonel was so excited to be the only one of his Colonel buddies to have a ski team, that any idea of courts martial disappeared. He practically “drooled” as he accepted our cups.

CENTCOM Detachment, Big Sand Box Navy C-130T A/C 165159.
This was a Detachment that my Loadmaster - 8220 Check Ride occurred on. (me center) Usually, the Check Ride is on a single Mission of a couple days or so. Due to OPS/NATOPS scheduling and being OCONUS, my Check Ride lasted 45 Days, longest in Squadron History. Needless to say, I was well versed. Explains why I would later often be entrusted to fly solo aft on Missions (only Loadmaster), which broke with Wing SOP. My longest solo Mission was 13 day RON across the Pacific. A lot of solitude aft at 25,000 feet, hours on end. So lonely that I believe I heard voices in my head. Then I realized that I was on headset.
