Do you have to do a special assignment, like recruiter or drill sergeant, as an NCO?

Not necessarily, but why wouldn’t you? Both are integral pieces of the Army’s workforce life-cycle. Those duties are your opportunity to pay it forward or, pay back those who assisted in making you a trusted Army professional.

Well i was just wondering because i have no future in my MOS because points have been maxed for SSG since the day i got into the army. So i just wanted to see if i would get chosen for a special assignment. I plan on going warrant since i love my job but i know I’ll have to RCP if i can’t get every point possible. But i plan on going recruiting before i go warrant.

Thank you very much for this information. I really do appreciate it. Yeah the biggest challenge is getting an ALC slot. I’ve heard it from other 91D promotables. I feel like warrant is the only route i could go especially if imma stay in 20. It sucks i got stuck in this MOS because i love using G-ARMY. like I’ve been doing this since i got to fort hood running this Motor Pool. I just like using it and helping out other 92A’s doing there job. But there MOS is a dead route also.

SGT (Join to see) - Well, I can tell you 91D's are a hard MOS to get promoted in not impossible, though. I was a 91D on active, and well after seven years, I turned to the Reserves and switched my MOS because the reserves were the same thing. That is unless I wanted to travel over to Ft. Lewis every month. Your career is what you make of it. I did not want to do that, so I became a 25B. Did that for a year, and new I would not get picked up for E6 unless I wanted to travel. So, switched MOS's again to an 88N. Now I have the ARCC wanting me to be a TPU Recruiter. Skies the limit if you move around and learn new things.

It really depends on how good you are in your MOS. If you rank in the top 1% of your MOS then you’ll advance ahead of most your peers. Special assignments help you get there quicker. When I say top 1% I mean in everything the Army expects you to be. Job skill, physically, education, leadership positions, etc. You just can’t be a good generator operator. Best assignment I had was my time as a drill sergeant, even though it was at the worst Army installation in the Army at the time.

There is no requirment. There aren’t enough to go around to make them mandatory. If one is an expert their MOS it is encouraged. Either way, the key to success is doing your current job the best that you possibly can. Thier are CSMs who have, and those who have not. Become an expert, and take care of your Soldiers.
