COL Mikel J. Burroughs, I had this taken at Millington NSA, TN, in SEP96 while assigned to the National Communications System (DOD). It was my last "official" photo portrait prior to retirement in MAY98.
I'm afraid I did not get the retirement send off that you received though! People just shook hands, said good bye and I got on a plane and flew back from Arlington, VA. About a year later I received the Defense MSM in the mail with a sticky note saying "Sorry this took so long."

Taken at my 30th reunion and after the Wheaton College class of 2015 commissioning ceremony on May 10, 205. This was the last time I put on the uniform before transferring to the retired reserve.

COL Mikel J. Burroughs I am posting three pictures. The first two are from my demobilization ceremony in the Pentagon in May 2004 with my wife after the award and with my friend COL Bruce Reilly presenting the award citation. After that point I went into a position as a drilling IMA until I transferred to the retired reserve.
In February 2008 I traveled to Fort Benning GA, to see my oldest adopted son get accepted into 3/75 Ranger Battalion. the third picture is me slapping is velcro 3/75 scroll onto his left shoulder.
I transitioned into the retired reserve with no notice of fanfare on June 1 2008. At that time I had diverticulitis and post herpetic neuralgia but didn't know it.:-)

COL Mikel J. Burroughs: I had to leave the Army; because of my "disability".
So consequently I don't have the photos of me- before, during or after.
In Anger, I threw all of my Army-for lack of a better word-stuff-down at the end of some hallway.
I was so sad that I was let go; I went to the Presidio Army Base- every day-for about a year.
P.S. Mikel, here is a photograph of my face; however, I am not in my uniform.

My Last would be the Photo for the Cruise Book for my Last Westpac and the wonderful Project Outboard Crew that I worked with. I think there is a formal picture from the Cruise Book also with me in Full Dress Uniform with Medals (Only happened Once) and I think I gave that picture to my Youngest Nephew.

This one was taken about a month or two before my retirement. I use to walk back and forth to work at Ft Belvoir and my wife snapped this one day on my way home. In TX now trying to enjoy retirement. Question though: Can we were beards as retirees in uniform? I ask because of COL Burroughs photo. It looks sharp and I would assume that as long as it is trimmed and doesn't look like Grizzly Adams, your good. I have the obligatory retiree facial hair and don't want to shave it off for my kids weddings next year.

This is my last active duty salute, given during my retirement ceremony, to a flag I carried home from Afghanistan. Prior to this, the flag was carried by my cousin on an F-18 mission over Afghanistan, from the USS George Washington in the summer of 2002 while I served on the ground, attached to the 455th AEG (A-10 Unit) at Bagram Air Field. Years later, it returned to Afghanistan with me, and it was the last US flag to fly over Camp Estelle, Shindand AB, on the day the 838th AEAG (Air Advisory Unit) was moved to another location (two days before I redeployed in Feb 2014). Shortly after my return, I had the flag flown over the 9/11 Memorials of the Pentagon and the World Trade Center. It now sits proudly in my Shadow Box.

This was at my son's "Turning Blue" ceremony a couple months ago; a little over 5 years after retirement. He INSISTED I wear my uniform (despite the significant alterations that had to be made. I didn't realize that uniforms actually shrink if left on the hanger too long :) Brought back a LOT of memories from 30 years ago when I stood there. The pic was taken in the AMAZING infantry museum they have built down there.

My last photo in uniform, early January 1989. I was attached to Naval Transient Personnel Unit at Naval Base, Charleston, South Carolina and had just been medically retired from the Navy. Within three months, I will have moved to England and started my new life with my English wife. The photo is a bit of an in-joke, between my wife and I. Our dog - for some strange reason - was addicted to my white "dixie cup" hats. She didn't touch my ball caps or any other stuff. Just the white hats. And she'd always run and hide it. But right before I'm ready to head to work! So now that I was out, I gave her my "dog dishes" (slang for the white hats). For you trivia buffs, I'm wearing the old Working Blue uniform, nicknamed the "Johnny Cash" (the female variant was referred to as the "Eva Braun").

19 June 1977 at the American Embassy in Brussels, Belgium w/ U.S. Ambassador Anne Cox Chambers. I received a "European Out" meaning I did not have to return to a Marine Base in CONUS for discharge. I went to the Embassy on active duty, returned to the Marine House on inactive reserve, changed into blue jeans and hopped a train then ferry to Ireland.

I retired my Brother on December 31, 2015. He had served 27 years in the Navy. I commissioned him on our Dad's birthday (Naval Officer) and I welcomed him back ashore on our Grandfather's birthday (Army Officer). He was wearing our Dad's uniform for his ceremony. Unfortunately, the Army had changed its uniform and I had to purchase a new uniform for his ceremony. My Brother was there for me on my Direct Commission and he retired me when I finished 23 years later.

As a Battalion Sergeant Major (I was the CSM of a battalion only authorized a SGM in the position, even though I'd been a CSM designee for all but the first two months of my assignment there), my Brigade Commander and CSM and Battalion Commander decided I needed a full Brigade parade for my retirement ceremony. It was a beautiful day at the end of May, 1994, with the full brigade and a local Army field band. Here are a few pictures.

The opening line of my speech was: "When I found out I would be having a full parade with all you Soldiers standing tall today, I asked a number of you what you thought I should talk about. The best response I got was from one PFC who thought very seriously about standing out here in the sun, before responding 'I think you should talk about three minutes.' So that's what I'm going to try to do."

this is me around 6 months after I retired wearing my Dress blues for the last time to get married in Atlanta GA, its the semi formal dress uniform option in 2001 with white shirt and bow tie and you don't wear a hat :) I couldn't locate my 7lvl Maintenance Badge so I substituted a Star Fleet Com Badge other then that it was all withing 35-10 or what ever they call USAF uniform standards today LOL

This is a photo of my Dad at the end of WW II. Notice the unit patch. My father was the American Army Air Corps Liaison to the Russian Air Force for the bombing of Berlin. His job was to coordinate Russian and American bombing. By the way, Navigators in those days were considered Engineers...

My Retirement in May 2014 as the GS-15 MC4 Deputy PM after 15 years of service (1999-2014). Picture is of my receipt of the Department of the Army Meritorious Civilian Service Award (MCSA) - (equivalent to DoD LOM) from Doug Wiltsie (SES) -Program Executive Officer -Enterprise Information Systems (PEO-EIS). Doug and I severed together from 1985-88 when I was a Captain and he was a GS-12 for PM - Night Vision Devices.

I was actually in an Airborne unit, but I wanted one picture before I left with the scrambled eggs. My favorite award was the Jordanian Special Forces Airborne Wings. There were not too many of us with those.

I probably have one somewhere in a box with a zillion other photos. Not nearly as impressive as the pictures I've seen relating to this post. Now I did get a rousing ovation and cheers when I stepped out of the Battery Commanders office to leave Ft. Sill during the morning formation. That was an especially memorable moment for me. BC heard the ruckus and came out to see what was going on. He looked kind of surprised and said "Ruck, are they cheering you"? I said, "Looks that way Sir". He shook his head and went back inside. Guess he didn't get a lot of cheers in his career. LOL.

Yes.... Thanks for asking COL Mikel J. Burroughs. It was fun looking back through these photos, and hard to believe it has been 4 years. I actually I still wear a uniform, but this was from my retirement.... After 32 years, 11 months, and 20 days... It was over. This is me walking away from the mic and trying to keep it together, realize it was actually over. Then me and my best fiends. Finally me and my wife of 33 years, and now LTG David Quantock; my favorite boss ever.

General Hansford T. Johnson presents Defense Meritorious Service Medal to me about a year before I retired. Between those two events was DESERT SHIELD/DESERT STORM. Gen Johnson was Commander in Chief US Transportation Command.

Profile pic is last in uniform. USMC Ball Nov 97. Didn't ask for and would have declined any parade or ceremony because I would not want the Marines to have to go through all the practice and event just for me. Was already employed while on terminal leave. Drove in to base on a Sunday and picked up retirement orders from Staff Duty in civies on effective date. Always thought about it every time I attended a ceremony but when the time came I was just glad to have made it and moved on. USMC took good care of Family and myself and owed me nothing more. I did make entry in SDNCO Logbook "CWO3 McIntosh now ashore". Received end of service MSM in the mail a few months later. DFAS thanks me once a month and VA gives me all the healthcare that I can survive. Semper Fi Mac.

I had forgotten about this. A few years ago, while attending Central Virginia Community College I was asked to participate in a ceremony during a Veterans Day Flag Raising. CVCC just updated their Website and on their Veterans page the banner at the top of the page in my photo with two friends I went to school with. I am the center holding the flag. Photograph one of first in the Corps. Finding the last in Marine uniform would require a search. The California Highway Patrol may have one. Last photograph as a contracted operator in Afghanistan. My last position served was as Combat Systems Officer at the Aegis Combat Systems Engineering Development Site (CSEDS) at Moorestown New Jersey. It was also the location of my retirement ceremony in March 1990. It was the culmination of 23+ years service in the Navy (1966-1990), or as it is said in the poem, .."for 23 years I stood the watch". The CO was Capt. Gill Monell. At the culmination of the ceremony, I was "Piped over the side" as pictured with me returning a hand salute from "Side Boys while the Boatswain piped me over. This is a very solemn event in the ceremony for me and my wife. Present at my retirement was my father who served as a 2nd Class Gunners mate in world War II and I could tell he was very moved by the event! My wife, who held the fort down all those years I was at sea was also moved to tears! The last photo of me holding a bottle of Jack Daniels was taken at my home, and the last photo of me in my Navy Uniform!

The only picture I ever had in uniform was my basic training picture. My unit only updated photos for those soldiers put in roles such as Soldier of the Year and other stuff. None of the regular joes had updated pictures. We used Basic Training pictures for all 5 of the guys we lost in Iraq, one a SGT, 3 were SPC, and the last a PFC.

How about one of the very first photos. Taken in October or November 1972. The three Musketeers in High School. We graduated and all went to a different branch of the service. We were all home for the first and last time between basic and our advanced training. I followed my father's foot steps and went into the Army, Jim Ashley who I'd know since the 3rd grade went into the Navy and Mike Robinson followed his father's foot steps and went into the Air Force. I was the only one to do 20+ years and retire from the military.

After I boarded the C-130 in Baghdad, I handed the camera to another passenger and asked if he could please take this picture. When we arrived in Ali Asalem, Kuwait, the driver took me to the embassy quarters, I took a shower, changed into civilian clothes, and was driven to the Kuwait City International airport. After several stops along the way, I turned in all my military garb for the last time at Fort Bliss, Texas. One month later, with Leave, I officially retired at MacDill AFB.

I do, Im on OCP, at NTC conducting a TOC exercise to certify our readiness, interrupted 6 days from change of mission, for a briefing to be ready to pack and deploy to a distant country in the next 48 hours ... Kettle into the fire so to speak...The pic is of me telling that 3 star, that though I was only a few weeks from retirement, Id deploy with my TOC and get it up and operational....just call DA and tell um Im not done yet......We got a stand down message 2 days later, I went home, cleared my office and walked away. They were too busy to do awards and ceremony, or even a final NCORER so no good buys, no "final" pictures.. I was at NTC redyeing to deploy one week and retired the next.

My retirement Ceremony in June 2009. Was a very special day. I did two joint assignments (SOUTHCOM and PACOM), so I had two from each service (both active and reserve) as my side boys. In addition, Lt Gen "Fig" Leaf, USAF (ret) and PACOM Deputy Commander during a good portion of my tour was my retirement speaker. Ceremony was held in the Seabee Chapel at Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC), Port Hueneme, Where my wife Chelsea were married 17 years earlier. During the ceremony, I proposed to her again and we renewed our vows. Photos show the side boys, presentation of the LOM from CAPT Jim McHugh, CO NBVC, me proposing to Chelsea, My retirement certificate with CAPT McHugh and Lt Gen Leaf and the "request to go ashore".

Well these are what I could find - some gems! All around 1977-78. 1st: Gray Army AF At Ft. Lewis, WA. Me out on the flight line after an unusual snow fall. I worked in the hangar doing sheet metal on helicopters. 2nd: On loading detail at McChord AFB second from the right. Jeez it was cold! 3rd: I was contemplating doing another 3 years - I guess this photo shows you my decision. BTW That jacket was from a good buddy he got for me while stationed in Korea at Camp Casey near the DMZ. Enjoy! Had a great time looking through everyone's photos.

The only thing I have, is my Red Boot Camp book and the Boot Camp Platoon picture, I took the picture I use here and had it blown up. I wish I had something like cell phone when I was in. I went to Okinawa and went to the Worlds Fair, went to Camp Fuji in Japan, I don't even have the walking stick I got when I went up Mt Fuji and had the stations burned in.

I am sorry, no I do not. My leaving the service was a quiet one. I signed the necessary papers from Fort Riley and then left for the National Guard and started to serve there two months later and when i finished there It was a silent good bye, after the Christmas party, two weeks later. No fanfare no handshakes, just a you will get your discharge papers signed by the Governor in the mail.

Last Picture in uniform ? That's a tough one. I pretty much went straight from basic at Ft Ord , CA. , from there I was sent to Fort Rucker, AL. Aviation training and due to my high scores I had the option to volunteer for air traffic control rather than door gunner / crew chief . I joined to be a Warrant officer helicopter pilot for which I qualified on the pre entry barrage of tests , so A T C seemed to be the logical choice while waiting for my security clearances to go thru at the end of ATC (tower) half my class were shipped off to Vietnam the instructors asked for "volunteers" for radar training GCA (ground control approach) an additional 9 weeks of transition and hands on training & 50 runs of qualification. NeI didn't have much time for pictures other than fatigues / BDU's. During the interim of my training my new orders were cut for flight school at Ft. Wolters , TX. During WOC flight training , due to the war winding down the Senate had to cut all spending on military training "replacement pilots . talk about getting kicked off your horse in mid-stream. From there it was an automatic ticket across the "duck pond (Vietnam) of course the 30 day leave to say good bye to my family and friends ...possibly for the last time . Once in Nam, I was stationed at Thai MERC base called Bearcat where I performed my duties as a tower ATC When I wasn't working in the tower ...off duty . Knowing a lot of pilots either from flight school , or work I would jump in the co-pilot seat whether it be a Huey, Chinook, or Cobra "snake " gunship .Kept me busy and out of trouble....most of the time. At some point in my deployment I was working radar either during my 2nd tour I served as a radar controller until they closed the whole base . Again they asked for volunteers to remain behind in order to train the VNAF controllers that were supposed to be there , that never showed up . Apparently, they had never left Saigon. When their General showed up expecting to review his VN troops only to find they skipped out and were partying in Saigon the whole time they were supposed to be there .... His reaction...."PRICELESS" Talk about a total melt down and break in the chain of command ! While at Quang Tri they offered me to cross over into OV-1 Mohawk using SLAR (Side Looking Airborne Radar / surveillance ). I figured if I am not flying (officer) ...forget it At that point I already felt betrayed by the army. So I extended to my end of hitch till my last day (3 yrs) So I volunteered (again) to remain behind in order to train them ...and see some action , which "Chalie" did not disappoint us , by one night at 3 AM a sapper snuck into our ammo dump with one well placed grenade ... just 2 blocks away . The initial blast . Which turned out to be an interesting lesson in physics for me . Usually, we tend to think of a concussion associated with a blast....quite the opposite . I was sound asleep and on that particular night I decided to sleep in my new cargo net hammock I had just hung above my bed (not a folding army cot ) which sat about 20 inches unfortunately which was just above the sand bagged hooch's exterior . the only sound that woke me up was the sound of window and doors being sucked off the building ..inward toward the blast . Then a split second later came the concussion . By then I was in the process of waking up and diving out of my hammock 6 feet downward towards the floor ...happy landings . As I landed with a heavy thud I low crawled over to my hootch mate's bunk who was passed out due to his addiction (not me ) Literally grabbed his drugged addled carcass out of his bunk and too the floor dragging him to the door and shoved him out of where the door "was" and yelled at him to get his ass to the bunker . Knowing the golden opportunity to photo document this event. I grabbed my camera bag and hauled bananas thru the compound towards our 65 foot ATC tower up I scrambled to check on in the event that our brother controller might be down. Fortunately , he was already vacated to shelter (bunker) then for the next hour I filmed (8mm) of the most intense fireworks display ever , as my CC yelled up at me from the bunker to get my xxx to the bunker. to which I replied "Yes Sir , I'll be right down ...only have 50 feet of film left " what I din't include the fact I had 3 plus rolls of 35 mm "still" film left . When I used up almost all 3 rolls , with the sound of shrapnel whizzing everywhere I joined my company (321st AVN detachment ) already in the bunker The ammo dump "cooked" non stop for the next 3 days . As for the pictures none of me lunging around in class A's . if I can find one my most liked is the one of me with my dad on the CA coast near Ft Ord after basic as I have none of me because I was in a bases hospital while my company A33 were graduating , so they gave me a day pass when I recovered ( URI, bronchitis & bronchial pneumonia 3 to 4 times during basic) another story in itself .

This picture is of my Dad, CMSgt Raymond Johnson and me (at the time SP4) on the day I left Turkey, around May, 1966. Taken at TUSLOG Det. 3-2, Samsun, Turkey. My dad was in the Air Force Security Service and I was Army Security Agency at TUSLOG Det. 4, Sinop, Turkey. We saw each other once a month or so via the mail plane from Samsun to Sinop. He still had about 6 months left in Turkey when this was taken. We were not allowed to leave the country in uniform.
