Did you know there are an estimated 5.5 million military caregivers in the United States? Of these, 1.1 million are caring for post-9/11 veterans. Military caregivers are family members, friends or acquaintances that provide care and assistance to wounded, injured or ill veterans and service members. This daily endeavor can take a toll on caregivers when it comes to their mental and physical wellbeing.

May is the Month of the Military Caregiver and this presents the perfect opportunity to encourage military caregivers to carve out time for themselves in support of their own mental health and wellness as they care for others. Do you know a military or veteran caregiver? Show them your support.

My wife takes care of two totally disabled veterans, my son and myself. Twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. For the VA to employ personnel for us would be eight employees. Yet when it comes to assistance we get zero. She is 78 years old and I often wonder how the casually write us off.

So many of us perform “caregiving” duties and don’t even realize it because we are just being a good friend to a fellow vet.

I have been an invalid since 2014, my wife cares for me and my son (a 100% veteran) twenty four hours a day. The government would rather contract the care, at triple the expense, than provide her the support we need.
