I enlisted on 10 November 1953 which was my 18th Birthday and also the 178th Birthday of the Marine Corps. The Marines give the first piece of our Birthday cake to the oldest Marines. So on 10 November 1954 I gave it to our CSM at the Boston Navy Yard, Charlestown MA

Sgt Tom Cunnally I'll have to admit you have me beat by more than a couple of years on that one. Most if not all the trainers and DIs I had a few yrs later came in around your fime frame. Many of them were Korean War Vets. We called them the 'Old Corps' and the 'Hard Corps'. Best wishes.

Capt Tom Brown - We also had "China Marines" when I served. They had been in China in the '30s

I'm the youngster, USAF was only 20 when I was commissioned in May 1968. I was 21 then, so I'm actually older than the USAF.

I joined in the 236th year of my beloved Marine Corps. Coincidentally, it was the week of the Birthday Ball when I checked out of A school and checked into the Fleet. Unfortunately, it was also the only Ball I have ever missed.

Cpl Justin Goolsby That is a great statement! I have only been to one Marine Corps Ball at La Costa Resort near Camp Pendleton. General Mattis was the featured speaker and I was privileged to sit with the 'youngest Marine", he was a tad nervous, did well and later fixated on his date for the night. At the conclusion of the Ball, I was dismayed to refuse a big cigar, another addiction to battle!

That is a great memory to share and I will admit to being a tad jealous. Mattis reputation makes him someone to look up to. I've always been envious of the "youngest Marine" tradition. Usually the most fresh faced boot to the unit and most times they don't even realize just how big of a deal it is. But they'll have stories to tell that's for sure.

Cpl Justin Goolsby A friend of a son was an enlisted member of the General's staff in Iraq, he and a few other local, prior service Marines do an annual Ball.
