Do you know how we can submit a 1968 Veteran for posthumous award?

HR Personnel out there in RP Land or anyone with knowledge need your help. @TSgt Dawn Premock TSgt Dawn Premock need shelp in submitting a posthumous award for someone who saved soldiers and was KIA in the process. She has one person still living who can recount the full details.

It was her Uncle Dennis Premock KIA May 6, 1968

Please provide all the details on this award can be submitted? Need to know the How (Forms and documentation - witness statement from indiviaul, the Where (what address does it need to be submitted to), and the When (How long does it take?).

Good for everyone to know that knows somebody that has been overlooked or forgotten and they have knoweldge of valor above and beyond the Call of Duty.

Please share your stories that may have been forgotten!

What service? I'd start by looking at the services' public website under G1 or Personnel to look for Awards policy, then contact them directly. Local VSOs like VFW might also have some experience in this, potentially.

This is right up the VFW's alley Col Mikel Burroughs- submit certified true copies (NEVER THE ORIGINALS) to the VFW, as well as the branch of the service's archive department. The VFW should be "chomping at the bit" for something like this. It would help if the witness was also a VFW member

I saw a Bronze Star presented 20+ years after action. The family went through their local Congressman to get the ball rolling. Not sure if that helps or not.

My retired senior Human Resources NCO spouse, SFC Charles Drushal USA RET, has a couple of suggestions:

Learn what document the Request for (Posthumous) Award must be submitted on. Since Charles has been retired for 22 years and form numbers/editions change over time, he can't suggest a form number. Things that he knows will be required are the full account of events from the individual who is still living. Have that person write it out or have someone do it for him. Have him sign it with his name, rank and unit. Additionally, locate anybody in the command chain who has any knowledge of the event(s) and get similar statement(s). These don't need to include all of the details, but the more details, the better. Also include any other supporting documentation that the form requires. For example, her uncle's discharge documents showing that he was KIA.

A good place to start would be by contacting one of the individuals or families who have recently received extremely overdue awards. Learn about the process they went through to get their award(s).

I hope that TSgt Dawn Premock's Uncle US Army SGT Dennis Premock will be awarded a posthumous award for valor based on his actions "On May 6, 1968 a tank in front of his was hit. Sgt Premock ran from his tank to save his fellow soldiers and he was taken down by small arms fire."
I am glad that others have weighed in with specifics including contacting the respective Congressman SSG Jarrod Stover and contacting VFW GySgt Melissa Gravila

Honestly Sir, I would send it straight to President Trump and cc a copy to all personnel branches of military. What an wonderful thing to not just be recognized by ones valer but a possible good start for President Trump our chief and commander give public acknowledgment of something like this.

Since more than three years have elapsed, you will need a Congressman to support the action. Given that, the action is fairly straightforward. It will proceed through HRC to the army Secretary for approval. Higher than that if it is a DSC or MOH

I'm not absolutely sure but I would think that the letter requesting the Medal and a notarized recollection of the action should go to the President and/ or Whitehouse staff.

Not sure, but I do know a moh was awarded in 1978 for action in late 1944! Guy had 2 or 3 silvers, bronze w/clusters, and SEVEN purple hearts! His co in 44, a major, had prepped the recommendation for moh, but was then killed! Paperwork lost, found in 70s, awarded moh by Carter in 78! Can't remember his name, though! The point being, it can be done!

Army Retiree and Veteran Award Inquiries

Army Retiree/Veterans or their primary Next of Kin (spouse, children, and/or grandchildren only) may submit requests to the appropriate office for reissuance of medals/certificates; for review/determination of awards not previously considered; or reconsideration of downgraded/disapproved awards.

Awards and Decorations Branch

Only those award requests based on new award information that require a policy determination, such as entitlements of the Purple Heart and retroactive award of badge, are processed at the Awards and Decorations Branch. These requests are processed in the order they are received.

Retroactive recommendations for awards for retirees/veterans beyond the two-year time limitation must be submitted in accordance with Title 10, Section 1130, United States Code.

National Personnel Records Center and Human Resources Command

Requests for previously approved awards, such as requests for orders, certificates, and medal sets, should be forwarded to either the National Personnel Records Center or the Human Resources Command - Kentucky based upon when the retiree/veteran terminated service.

Army Board for Corrections of Military Records

If after you have exhausted application to the Army Awards Board for a military award, you still feel that you are entitled to an award, you may apply to the Army Board for Correction of Military Records (ABCMR) for consideration. You may submit an online application or you may submit a DD Form 149, Application for Correction of Military Records, both found at the ABCMR website. Include with your application copies of any correspondence with the Army Awards Board and any related military documents or records in your possession to support your request.

I would start with a request for service record from The National Archives. These MUST be requested by a recognized next of kin as defined by that branch of service (unrewarded spouse, son, daughter,etc per branch regs). This will give the record of what medals they may be due as well as place them in the time and place of the specified action for which they are believed due the medal. From there, I would say to use that to petition their Senator for redress

My ex-father in law was the VFW Post Adjutant. He did this kind of stuff all the time. Have her contact the local VFW and they should be able to handle it.
