We had a huge festival back home (Buffalo, NY). But that was community based. I've heard little about it in the military from what I see

To put it in simple terms. It is the Fourth of July for African Americans. Only it didn't occur until 1863.

Sgt Jay Jones - As I said, after looking it up, I now know what it is just as I understand what Passover is to the Jews. And just like Passover, I do nothing to celebrate or honor it. I've no opinion about either celebration but I do acknowledge them as historically significant events.
