It was my first duty station when I enlisted. I was there '89-'91 with the 56th FA Cmd "Pershing" HSB 1-9FA. Yes, I'm a "Pershing" Soldier. I was there when the Wall came down, when Germany reunited, the end of the Cold War and the completion of the INF Treaty between the United States and Soviet Union. I was on the team that removed the Nuke Warheads out of our bunkers. There were only 3 battalions and they will say, we were the last ones to remove the warheads, I honestly, don't care, I just know that I was part of that team. My post was on Wiley Kaserne, Neu Ulm, FRG (West Germany). I keep in touch with my very first roommate after all these years. Had some good times there, the Deutsche Mark (before the Euro) rate was about 2 - 3 Marks to the dollar. But the fun one was the Pfennig. A Pfennig value was less than a penny. So when you went to the bar with your buddies and you heard, "PFENNIG CHECK!", you better produce one otherwise you bought everybody at your table a beer. Jeffeweisen, Krystalweissen was good bier, but nothing like drinking the world's strongest bier, the EKU. Half of that tiny bottle and you would need an EKG to check your heart rate. Some old fart is reading this, laughing and saying, "I remember that!" Sachsenhausen up in Frankfurt, Oktoberfest, German-Americanfests, the food, all was great. Had an awesome time there. Had the opportunity to go to Holland and do the Nijmegen road March in Holland and the Battle of the Bulge Road March in Belgium. Good good times. Ok, I'm done here.
