From my experience (Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush, Carter) it just seemed like the Republicans had more respect for the military.

SSgt Cynthia Hamilton - What was President Obama's take on the current conflicts? We certainly didn't make much headway in withdrawing from either Afghanistan, or Iraq under his watch, didn't even come close to closing down Gitmo. AND what, eight years of substandard increases in pay? Erosion of benefits for serving? Still going on with this Defense Health Agency debacle, and their handling of Tricare and kicking retirees and dependents out of MTFs, enacted during the last couples of years of Obama's administration. I don't think Johnson's Vietnamese peace plan had a snowballs chance in hell of succeeding, what with him and his "whiz kid" McNamara personally directing the Vietnamese conflict, I think the North was stringing Johnson along, even with Nixon's purported influence. Personally , if you're offended by serving your country, I'd give some thought to leaving service, and finding something else to do ...

SSG Robert Weiser dude, I served my time during Vietnam, I know well the idiocy of McNamara. No one knew about the peace deal til later, but facts lead an informed reader to say the deal was real.

As far as Obama and your nursing your lack of pay, you can lay that tarbaby at the feet of the republicans in the Senate. Dont just bitch, know your facts. You're about to lose your democracy, we swore an oath to protect our country from all enemies, foriegn and DOMESTIC. Let's focus on that, shall we?

SSgt Cynthia Hamilton - Focus on domestic enemies, sounds good, that's a ballot box issue, not a rehashing of 50 year old butt hurt issues

I think the best evidence of having respect for the armed forces is to have served yourself when you had the opportunity, especially if you were of service age when the country was at war. Service isn't for everyone, but you wouldn't expect a future Commander in Chief to have actively avoided service in wartime. At least I wouldn't find that a very good qualifier for the job.

We got good pay raises from Republicans Ford and Reagan. Under Democrats we were lucky to get a cost of living raise that covered inflation. Case in point, Carter.

1SG Steven Imerman, Carter has spent his entire post-Presidency life trying to make up for being such a lame incumbent. I still haven’t gotten over him giving the Panama Canal back to Panama. I know we had a lease, but all he had to do was say, “We’re renegotiating the lease.” The U.S. created Panama anyway, and with the sole purpose of building the Panama Canal.

I joined in '74, Nixon resigned while I was in Basic, so I missed that one, though the sergeants talked of it often..

Eh. Bitterly complaining about everything is one of the finest traditions of military service. The only thing that ever changes is who they’re whining about
