I not talking about family/friends. I mean things/possessions/inanimate objects.
I might shoot someone trying to steal our dog, which only counts as an inanimate object after he’s been chasing his Wubba around the RV for 30 minutes. On the other hand, he is a fellow Jarhead.

Honestly, no. But I'd shoot a perpetrator if I caught him in my home. How do I know if he's only there to steal an object? How do I know he won't harm my family and myself to protect his anonymity? I don't. Anyone who enters my home unlawfully will be shot. I don't need to analyze his intent.

No, I was raised to believe that human life is the top of the priority list. Understood that equation changes in times or places of war but in peacetime America I think it would be irresponsible to shoot someone for stealing anything. The item can be replaced......the life cannot.

MSgt George Cater - What about the mental anguish on your wife and kids that they no longer feel safe in their own home? Shoot the guy in the head. OH just one more thing...NEVER shoot to wound, they can and will sue you for life support. Dead men don't sue. Hard for a body to call a lawyer and file a lawsuit against the defender of the home.

SSG Roger Ayscue - Geez man, The OP asked about stealing an inanimate object, not a home intrusion........that is a pretty huge leap you made there. I don't have a huge fear of home intrusions myself because I am a large guy and even when the other guy has a pistol I think I have a much better than 50/50 chance. If I lived in a neighborhood where home intrusions were a probability I think most burgulars would bypass my home due to my size even gang-bangers would have a second thought at easier pickings. If someone is in my house and armed, totally different story of how I would react vs simple theft of a inanimate object.

SPC Erich Guenther - no doubt, but most of the time, when deadly force is discussed it has to do with either catching a bad guy in your home or him coming in while you are there. I work in the industry that I see crime victims all the time.
I would not kill a guy because of stealing a bike, but breaking into my home ..total 'nother story.
