Because of my height and build most folks are intimidated so I never felt the need to carry a gun. Plus I have frequented the local shooting range and I am constantly appalled by what I see so, reduces my fear of hand guns being used against me competently, further. If I did feel the need to carry it would definitely be the Semi-Automatic. Now I am split between the M1911 .45 and Glock, feel more comfortable with the M1911 .45 but everyone keeps telling me the Glock is the way to go. I just do not like the holding stance for the Glock or magazine loading procedure.......eck.

Pistol b/c it holds more ammo and is faster to reload. However, a revolver has fewer moving parts and much less prone to failure and misfire. Rick has used it for 7 seasons.

Honestly I carry a semi auto, but everyone saying the "faster reload speeds" if you can't defend yourself from an attacker with 4-8 cartridges you probably need to go to the range more.

I personally like revolvers, however for combat and contact, obviously a pistol, having both my grandfathers 1911 (not 1911A) and his 1917 revolver, really make me a happy and honored man. They are both in better shape than these pictured and they shoot so well. No slack in the slide on the 1911 and its beautiful. I will have to get back from Afghanistan and take a pic of them both to post!

I prefer a MK19 or M2 but either is fine. More rounds in auto but you can use speed loaders same as mags to get around it. My Dan Wesson 14 .357 with right load is a show stopper with minimal rounds so either works. I just lean toward a good auto.

Both. Depends on the situation, where I'm going, what I'm wearing, etc. Lately I've taken to concealing a duty size 9mm. It has taken some getting used to being a duty size and concealing it. For my truck generally I use a .357 snub revolver loaded with defense .38 +P.

Personally I prefer semi-auto but both have there advantages. You can't go wrong with either platform. My favorite right now is my S&W 9mm Shield.

I'm in the proper tool for the use category. Everyday pocket carry is a semi, either a SA xds 45 or Sig P938 Equinox. However, we've been having bear trouble around our spread so it's the 460 revolver when I'm out and about. Bear made his last raid at the neighbors and was on the lighter side at 350 pounds when it met its demise. Think our dogs made him unwelcome earlier so it went after a safer coop.

My primary weapon is a SIG P220. As backup I prefer a revolver- like a S&W model 64 with a spurless hammer and a 2" barrel.

While I do prefer semi-auto, specifically the Sig Sauer P226 MK25 (haven't decided on the caliber), I haven't met a single handgun as sexy as this Colt Python. Revolvers have class. ;) Can you say, panty dropper?

I got short, fat stubby hands, like the rest of me. A revolver feels more comfortable to me and it is a much safer weapon by its simple design. But a semi auto holds more rounds, is typically lighter and easier to carry. I still stick with revolver though.

Revolver. Why? It doesn't spew brass all over hell's half-acre if you have to use it and wish to leave the scene quickly... ;-) OTOH, I do like my Kimber Ultra Carry II .45 for the shear stopping power. My revolver is a S&W J-Frame .38 Special Bodyguard. Good solid weapon that one...and fits in a front pocket.

Just bought my wife a revolver. While she is a retired Navy vet, she doesn't have that much experience with handguns. The revolver won't jam, stovepipe, and is easier for her to handle. For someone who doesn't have experience, go with a wheel gun. Once they are more experienced, move to a semi-auto.

Semi, my combat carry gun was 1911a1. My oldest civilian carry has been Detonics .45. The deciding factor has always been trigger pull. I have only handled one revolver with a smooth pull, a custom Ruger GP100, that belonged to an old recon Marine friend. Almost changed my mind on revolvers.

I have found that a semiauto is easier to conceal (doesn’t print as badly as a wheelgun) and in the .40 cal. and up calibers, has plenty of knockdown power. My favorite is the 1911 platform in .45 ACP. Many years ago, I got caught up in the Dirty Harry phenomenon and faithfully carried a Model 29 Smith with an 8 3/8" barrel in a shoulder holster. I had to dress for the revolver to keep it concealed (not real easy, but doable). My favorite revolver is my SAA Hartford Colt in .45LC. Even have the silver rattlesnakes on both sides of the 1-piece walnut grips. (More Eastwood, obviously.)

This is a trick question. All double-action pistols are semi-automatic.

However, to the point you were trying to get at, I prefer magazine-fed, because they generally tend to have a larger ammunition capacity (in most cases 9 or more) and can be fully reloaded more quickly without having to have specialised carrying equipment or revolver quick-reload clips.

Semi-auto. Cleaning up casings can be a little tedious and inconvenient at times but you can beat some of those mag capacities. One of the best weapons I ever owned was a EAA 9mm Witness. 17 round mag and an 18th in the chamber. Nothing is getting up from 18 hollow points to center mass.

A high pressure combat scenario would require semi-auto and lots of rounds. As an example, up against more than one opponent, and a .38 revolver would be too slow and not enough ammo. Not for nothing the police are turning to .40. When I was a kid they all carried .38. I'm sure they did an analysis before the change.

When I was in the Air Force and the 1st 10 years I was a police officer, the issued handgun was a revolver. As far as shooting either weapon there is only a few differences as far as technique, but they are basically the same. After 10 years with the revolver, my agency changed to the Beretta 92F or M9. The main advantage going to the automatic was increased ammunition capacity and much easier reloads. The downside is a safety issue that requires good training and that is decocking a weapon when firing has ceased and there's still ammo in the magazine. With good training, and I have carried an automatic for the past 20 years, I have never had an accidental discharge. I even carry occasionally a .380 with a round chambered, fully cooked with the safety on in a holster. If you carry for personal protection and don't have sufficient training to carry an automatic, I recommend a revolver. I prefer an automatic.

I was raised with both and revolvers are a touch more accurate 'for me' because of the fixed barrel, but if I'm ever in a situation where I have to defend myself or others the extra rounds, speed & ease of a magazine in a semi-auto allows for a changing environment as an event can add previously unseen dangers that 6 rounds may not cover. Reloading a revolver can be fast with practice but under fire it is a lot harder to as is everything else, the less often you have to reload the better.

My usual answer is anything that goes "bang" or "boom" is fine with me! I used to love my Colt 45, but since the arthritis has gotten so bad (I can't pull the slide back, and the recoil kills my wrist), I had to step down to a glock 9mm. But I carry a glock 40 Cal in my car (it has less recoil than my 9 mm). But there is still a little place in my heart for a good dependable revolver!

Depends on the situation. Overall I prefer a revolver due to its simplicity, reliability, and overall ruggedness. I pack around a .357 with a 6" barrel as a sidearm when I'm out hunting; hiking about; or doing farm work. I also like the thought that I can operate a revolver pretty well one-handed if it came down to it.

I like pistols, though, for their higher ammo capacity & rate of fire along with the ability to carry pre-loaded magazines (my revolver is single-action and the cylinder isn't designed to be rapidly swapped out). They also aren't half as bulky, so I carry a subcompact .40 when I travel. I would prefer a 1911, but due to my smaller stature those are hard to wear comfortably and keep concealed at the same time

Still haven't got the hang of reliably racking the slide back on my belt, though, and that tears up belts in a hurry.

I prefer a revolver for a simple reason. I have old, weaker, arthritis hands and I can't "rack" a semi-auto handgun. When trying out handguns we tried many types and it was virtually impossible for me to pull one back with the damage to my hands and thumbs, no matter how I pushed and pulled. So a .38 S&W it was for me. No need to do anything but point and shoot. I'd prefer my .22 lever action but it's a bit difficult to conceal, so the revolver is what I carry. We're in the process of finding someone to lighten up the trigger a bit since the fingers are a little weaker than they used to be (and my husband finally shot it and realized I wasn't the wimp he thought I was). I love the S&W, it's smaller, not complicated, and all I need is bullets to kill someone with the first three shots, so I'm good.

For me, it depends on the conditions, the ammunition, and the amount of time I'll be unable to clean / do maintenance on the weapon.

Most of the time, I prefer a semi-auto. The number of rounds, the automatic cycling, the ease and quickness of reloading all work in favor of the design. I also like the telltale sign to let you know you're out of ammo - won't buy a semi-auto that doesn't have a "lock open" function when I've emptied the magazine.

Speed loaders are okay, but can't beat "thumb release, slap in new magazine, release slide" for reloading.

I'm a lover of both sides of the fence on this issue. To me it boils down to the individual firearms. When it comes to revolvers I definitely tend to prefer wheelguns of the Smith & Wesson persuasion with a few colts in the main line up as a whole but not exclusively. When it comes to Semi-Autos I tend to be more biased by sub categories like SA or DA/SA DAK for which I like best. In the SA category the ole 1911 rains supreme for me and I tend to like the custom shop guns like STI, Dan Wesson, and Wilson Combat. I'm not trying to throw Les Baer under a bus but I just tend to more with the other manufacturers style same with nighthawk custom. I use to respect Ed Brown guns as they are excellent, until I met him in person and discovered that he is a colossal A-hole. In the SA/DA DAK world Sig Sauer is my favorite factory gun manufacturer. I'm not in love with Internal Striker fire pistols but I do respect makers like Springfield for the XD series and Glock. I don't have any real experience with Sig in this category to speak from but eager to see what there new 320 is like.

Either are potentially deadly however, the important thing to remember is bullet count. With automatics it’s easy to forget by some how many rounds are fired when caught in the heat of the moment. With revolvers you know you have 5 – 6 rounds depending on caliber before reloading. I suppose it’s individual preference.

I like both, who wouldn't but if I carried only one it would be a semi-auto pistol. You usually have more rounds, easier reloads and even a little easier to carry/draw IMHO.

Well on active duty as a Helo Crew Chief I had a 38 revolver. I loved it. Super accurate and always worked. We switched to the Baretta 9 mm and I did not like it. 1st edition had mechanical failures that were dangerous. I did experience a pin breakage once. They got better.
I still have a S&W no safety titanium. It is great 39+p. I bought my first pistole a Ruger 9mm.
I later sold that and now I only shoot 45. I prefer my XD-45. It never fails to shoot. Very accurate even at 50 yards. It has never jammed or misfired in 18 years. My wife got the XD-45 match grade a few years after me and she loves mine, I lover hers. LOL. Hers is more accurate. I can shoot smiley faces at 50 yards.The light weight and accuracy and additional stopping power of the 45 auto is a nice weapon for me. Others like other calibers. I went with 45 and 38 in pistols for ammo and other reasons. I have my 5.56 rifle, and my 7.62x51. So you see I stick to classic calibers, ones that tend to never fail and will always have a endless supply of ammo and reloading. Just my $0.02.

If well cared for an automatic is HIGHLY reliable.

Depends on the situ, edc is often one or the other…have a revolver as a bug to my primary duty weapon….but there’s always just something about a steel revolver that plasti heaters just don’t have….That Ole Skool Kool…

I shot a revolver once and hated it.
I love my Glock 19 plus the 15 vs. rounds vs. 6 rounds is also a selling point for semi-auto's like Glocks

The self-defense weapon I put on my bedside table each night is a Taurus Judge revolver loaded with .410 anti-personnel shotgun shells. The "terminal defense" load in those shells will cut a person nearly in half at 20 yards. The reloads for that weapon are four speed-loaders with .45 Long Colt soft-nose hollow points. If the "discussion" continues, I have two M1911A1 .45 ACP semi-auto pistols loaded with Speer Gold Dot hollow points located nearby, each with spare magazines. I prefer a revolver for my first weapon because it doesn't jam and there's always another round coming up.

Both, or either, require considerable experience and adequate safety measures. When out in public without my adult son (who could hit a wing off of a house fly) I prefer a semi-auto. 9mm is easy for women to carry in purses. At my home, I'm much more confident and comfortable with "Maggie", my long barrel .357 Magnum. She fits my hand like a glove.

Revolver is a good back up piece for quick draw after you run out of ammo or primary jams. No need to chamber a round.

Do I prefer a semi-automatic or a revolver *for what*? Different circumstances require different tools. That being said, I prefer a semi-automatic for EDC.
