No, before my time and I was in 1968 and E-5 was always a Sergeant. You listed E-3 as a Corporal and in my time, E-3 was a Lance/Corporal. E-4 was a Corporal.

Sgt David G Duchesneau - We had a squad leader who would toss your gear on the deck if he didn't like your "Junk on the Bunk"... So when I became a Fitness NCO I really busted his hump if he was just going through the motions...

Those of us who were in the "Old Corps" probably recall
E-1 Pvt
E-2 Pfc
E-3 Cpl
E-4 Sgt
E-5 S/Sgt
E-6 T/Sgt...
E-7 M/Sgt
E-6 Technical Sergeants were also referred to as Gunny..& we didn't have Lance Corporals.. Sgt E-4 was usually attained with 3 - 4 years of service..

Visiting with an Iwo survivor at a VA and he just gave me this lesson. I may have been told this before, but it seemed new to me.

I remember very well , I was a Sgt E-4 in 1958, have my Sgt. promotion certificate says Sgt. E4 permanent in the USMC. left Camp Pendleton 2 April 59 with 3 stripes on my arm. certificate in my duffle bag. was transferred to Marine reserve unit inactive. last I heard from the Marine Corps till June 1963 when I was sent my honorable discharge , it said Cpl. E-4 . what a surprise for me. The Marine Corps took a stripe from me with no explanation , no notice no anything. I have been trying for 8 years to get my service records. I get one sheet of paper from records showing 9 items, 4 where I bought clothing from another Marine and changed names, one sheet of paper with nine items for four years of my life, and took a stripe along with it. deployed 3 times. made rank, qualified with M1 and 45 pistol. short medical record from hand injury, letter of thanks from Bn. commander, nothing but one sheet of paper. And discharge with lose of a stripe. was awarded the China Ser. medal by the SECNV verified by 1st Lt, officer USMC. commandant tells they have no record of the medal. it's on my DD 214 which came with my discharge , also showing Cpl. E-4
YES SIR I DO REMEMBER SGT. E-4 First time I was ever demoted in cognito.
I was told by different organizations I belong to, to use my last rank . not the pay grade. no way I can change my profile pic, and remove one of the stripes.

Sgt. I didn't have any pay to loose and at 79 years old I already sucked it up. only problem I was never told. I knew a new rank was going to be added. but I was out before that happen, so don't know when it took place.

Sgt Frank Rinchich And you know that they had a fire and lost a bunch of records correct? Your copies may be the best evidence. It takes forever to get a response back on things as well. Good luck.

CMSgt Nolan was told my records were not involved in that fire. (time frame) I did get a call from a lady from HDQ. manpower management recs. Quantico Va .She said she thinks she has found more of my records, going to mail them to me. said didn't think it was all of them but was more then the one sheet national records sent. And had no idea why the records were scattered in so many places. surprising things are going quite fast, took eight years to get it started but now seems they are trying hard to find them.

The army was a little nicer. They let people keep the stripes which resulted in some confusion. It had pretty well worked itself out by the mid-sixties except for E6 and E7. We had lots of E7 Master Sergeants and some E6 Sergeants First Class still around.
