I wouldn't say that I have a strict rule about water temperatures, but my first open-water dive was in the springs in Ponce DeLeon, FL and it required a wet suit...and I didn't care too much for that. Not because of the cold water so much as I just didn't care for how restricted and bound-up I felt in a wet suit. My first few dives in salt water were without dive skins but I decided it would be best to use them just to save the flesh if I ever scraped against some coral or something. So if it's cold enough to require a wet suit, I'm not real keen on it, but I'll do it if I have to. I have to say that I far prefer warm water over cold. Diving in the Marianes Islands was about as good as it gets. Palau was interesting. The Philippines always interesting, especially with the Sea Snakes causing a bit of a pucker factor. I believe my favorite diving however was in Puerto Rico just off Luquillo / Fajardo Beach.
