I wouldn't say that I have a strict rule about water temperatures, but my first open-water dive was in the springs in Ponce DeLeon, FL and it required a wet suit...and I didn't care too much for that. Not because of the cold water so much as I just didn't care for how restricted and bound-up I felt in a wet suit. My first few dives in salt water were without dive skins but I decided it would be best to use them just to save the flesh if I ever scraped against some coral or something. So if it's cold enough to require a wet suit, I'm not real keen on it, but I'll do it if I have to. My preference is warmer, but not necessarily 80 degrees warm, know what I mean?
