I use only iron sights on by Sig. No optics/scopes etc. There is an indoor range that has a 100 yard distance. It always makes me chuckle to see people scoping at 100 yards with a rifle.

Shooting is almost theraputic. I enjoy the time and keeping the craft up to par. I have been a shooter from the time I was a kid. Fire arms have always been a very big part of my life, even though I have never been an avid hunter of major game, like deer, pheasants, elk, etc. During my early childhood I had a great uncle out in West Texas (whose name happened to be Sam by the way...sorry, I always thought it was humorous to actually have a real Uncle Sam) who had an enormous collection of fire arms dating back to the 1800s, and every last one of them was functional. The greatest thing about visiting our relatives out in West Texas was that we usually went out shooting Jack Rabbits out on the oil leases. I was given my first .22 rifle when I was 11 or 12 years old, a lever-action Ithica single-shot, and we lived in a rural area where I only had to step off of the back porch to shoot it. The property, about 10 acres, had a creek running through the middle of it and a heavily wooded area which was great for hunting small game, like squirrels and such. But I also spent a lot of time practicing by tossing empty soda cans out onto the pond which was about 50 meters from the back door and shooting at them until they sunk. Back in those days you could get a box of 50 rounds of .22 in the hardware department of the grocery store and I could buy them myself. Today, other than a few side-arms, I only have a .22 semi-automatic rifle and I have been resisting the urge to buy something like an AR-15, although I will probably succumb to it eventually. I have a Ruger P-89 9mm that I really enjoy taking to the local range for the time being. I am presently seriously entertaining buying a .308 which is identical to an AR-15...I'm just still working on justifying the expenditure of funds. I was an expert with the M-16A1 and really loved shooting it...but I didn't have to buy it or the ammo then, either. HAHAHA. I never picked up a firearm again until 2002 when my brother in law invited me to take a walk across the farm with a .22 rifle ...he took a dozen shots at the blackbirds but never hit one ... he handed it to me and with my first shot in 25 years, knocked a blackbird off of a wire at 50 yards ... I felt awful for killing one of Gods creatures and handed it back to him ... for years after, he called it a lucky shot until last fall when I had to set him straight. He was never in the service but now owns 2 ar-15s. I had to teach him how to take them apart and clean them. We loaded them up and went out to the corn fields just after they were harvested. We took 4 empty plastic milk gallons with us and lined them up 4 feet apart and walked to the other end of the field. not sure exactly how far but I know I can not hit a 5 iron that far so about 180 yards. I felt the cool Autumn breeze on my left cheek so I adjusted one click for the windage. I got down in the prone position (I like 30 degrees off center) and took my first shot ... it was just to the right of the gallon jug ... i adjusted one more click for windage ... I hit all four milk jugs with my next 4 shots. My brother in law does not question me anymore.

37 years later not only do i remember how to shoot, but i realize that all of those other things that those hated drill instructors taught me are so valuable to me now. I am not into "spray-n-pray" fire, so my ammo needs are much lower than many others. Reasons? First, I carry for personal protection, so practice with my carry sidearm is a must. For rifle, I enjoy the concentration and precision required for highly accurate distance shooting. Studying ballistics of a specific type of ammo, then going to the range and firing several rounds at a 100-yard target, then covering that hole with a quarter? Priceless! And that is a skill set handy for, uh, other things, should the need arise. After I retired in 1993, I didn't shoot as much as I had while on AD even though I owned some really nice weapons. After 9/11 I realized we were at war with Islam extremists carrying out their "holy war" against Christians such as my wife, kids and I. I started shooting again at least once a week when I lived in Colorado because you can drive out east of Colorado Springs or drive west up into the Rockies and basically set up a safe range and shoot. I met my wife and moved with her to Michigan in 1999 where the shooting isn't as easy to do unless you own some acreage (and I'm not sure it's still as easy to shoot in CO like it was when I lived there). I still try to shoot as often as possible but as a disabled vet it's not as easy or cheap as it used to be. Not only do I shoot because I've loved shooting since I was a kid, starting with a Benjamin pellet gun, I shoot to stay proficient with my everyday carry weapon since I have a Concealed Carry License. I made it a point to get that license after that nut killed some innocent people at a movie theater. Not just because of that incident and the Muslim fanatics but also because home invasions have become extremely common, not to mention those nuts chopping people's heads off and teenaged and younger men playing the "knock-out" game. So not only do I still shoot but I'm usually armed to protect my family, myself and anyone else if someone starts killing people at a location I'm at. I don't understand why people are coy about answering whether or not they own guns. I'm not afraid to admit it, and I defy anyone to attempt to take a single one away from me. I am a proud Benefactor Life Member of the NRA, and a NRA certified instructor and Range Master. I have carried concealed for 40 years. I shot competitively for over 20 years, I was a reserve Deputy Sheriff until my heart attack. I shoot more now than I did when I was in the military. I own over 60 weapons, and over 14,000 rounds of ammo. I own 5 AR-15's, and every one of them is 100 times more accurate than the M16A1 I carried during my years of service. I reload my own ammo. I do all the work on my own guns. I'm partial to 1911 style pistols, although I have many polymer framed striker fired pistols. My current carry gun is the Kimber Master Carry Ultra. I shoot at least 3 times a month, usually more often now that I'm semi-retired. Mostly practicing on my carry pistol, drawing from different positions and engaging steel targets out to 25 feet. I carry a bail-out bag and one rifle in the trunk of my car at all times. It's normally an AR-15 with 15 30-round magazines loaded. If you ask me why, I guess it's because I'm too old to take an ass whipping. While I can pretty much go one on one with just about anyone, unfortunately that's not the real world I live in, where gangs rule the streets and cops are afraid to enter. 1SG Frank Boynton Tue, 21 Apr 2015 12:42:03 -0400 2015-04-21T12:42:03-04:00 Response by SSG Richard Reilly made Apr 21 at 2015 12:46 PM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/do-you-still-go-to-the-range-since-you-left-the-service?n=606777&urlhash=606777

I went to the range about 2 months ago with my girlfriends 20 year old who is in college but wants to join the military. This is with an M1911A1 at 25 meters. A professional soldier, especially an Infantry ABN RGR with "other" select skills, never loses the touch. Scary thing was that there were civilians at the same range that day, firing AR-15s (and the like) with laser designator/aiming devices on them at these same 25 meter targets, and they had shot groups the size of a Volkswagen.
