I stopped using exchanges/commissaries due to proximity and not enough difference in cost. It seems that if we can pay disability pay, they would/should be eligible. They had to make sacrifices than many of us will not understand. Most of the commissaries on the Navy side are undersized, not much parking, wait 45 minutes to check out, etc. so the extra load wouldn't be a good idea. I hate creating more competition for scarce resources so I'd like to see how the expanded customer base will be properly served. In the USAR at times we were only allowed 10 days a year or something just as STUPID, and even had a punch card. Most AAFES could not be bothered and they did not care, the money was green. As someone said all the more money going to the community. Personally, we shop in town most of the time, hitting Sams, Costco, Publix and maybe Krogers. We still drop a few dollars at DeCA. At NTC it made sense to drive 70 miles round trip and avoid DeCA. BLUF: the more the merrier, let them all use the facilities all they want. There is talk of letting civil service have access, which at least MOAA is against. There are those that say no and this that want to limit to seriously impaired and their caretaker..(like in wheelchairs.. walkers.. 75,80 % or higher..
Disabled.. It would be hard to get around.. When in Service, I volunteered to help my severely disabled Comrades get around and shop I kinda distrusted some of those caretakers.. thinking they’d load the cart with their own selections.. some are not bad.. and may contribute their own funds.. Some others.. nah, don’t think so!
I was already a service member and eligible on my own merit.. I and some that were in NCO wive’s club and Officer Wive’s club would assist those seriously physical disabled.. I did it about 3 Times a month on 3 of my days off.. it be an almost all day sit-rep.. I enjoyed it more if it was maybe raining some. Or even overcast.. . no sense wasting a good day off..
