CPT Private RallyPoint Member, it's against the law to text while driving in the state of Tennessee. As to my actual practice, I'll plead the 5th and abstain from voting!

I remember pulling over a young lady for texting while on the base one day. She told me she was not texting, but scrolling her Playlist on her phone. The rest of the traffic stop played out like this:

Me: "So, you're not texting, but going through your playlist?"

Her: "Yes, sir."

Me: "Your playlist is on your phone, which you were holding, correct?"

Her: "Yes."

Me: "So, you're still using your phone, taking your eyes off the road because you're distracted trying to find a song you like?"

Her: ....

Me: "I'll be right back."

Rule of thumb, if it's not connected to a hands free device, don't use it while driving. This includes handling your phone for texting, Web browsing, music scrolling, etc. Nobody's life is worth five second of inattentive driving because a driver has their nose buried in their phone instead of having eyes on the road.

It is not worth a risk. I cant be distracted when I drive.

I don't even talk on a cell phone much less text when I am driving.

I only use Siri and do it hands free. If I can't do it hands free, it can wait.
