If the names and details are mentioned of how and why and other things with situation yes. I do believe when names are mentioned, and it does not say names have been changed. I would think you need consent and that always comes with money.

That is what I thought as well. The reason I am asking is that an Embedded Journalist with my unit in 2003 wrote a book about our time there, including how an Officer friend of mine had been killed among other things. None of the names were changed & I am just hoping his Widow & Child at least received some compensation for that chapter of the book.

SPC James Seigars - wow I hated embeds, sorry to hear that. I would think they had to get clearance, if not she needs to go after them.

SFC (Anonymous) - As you shouldn't. For about 3 years after I had been out I wrote articles for an online site (nothing Military related) and I recently stopped because I went from an average of 6k views to a few hundred because others were either outright lying in their "Stories" or they were using "Click Bait" headlines and photos to get more views and I wouldn't do it.
Also, just for transparency: I only knew the Officer for a few weeks prior to his death, but he was still a friend to me. At the time, I was a Sgt and we were in charge of the Soldier who killed him, Sgt Akbar (Born Mark Kools). We had just finished eating (Cpt. Seiffert told me he had a child that he was going to see when we were settled in country and he got leave) when Sgt Akbar went to his tent with grenades and killed him & almost shot me afterward (two bullets ricocheted off the concrete barrier I got behind). He went on to cause at least one other death and 12-14 injuries. Ironically, we never lost another Soldier the whole year in Mosul in our Battalion (only three injured on our last day in Country). So, I do count Cpt. Seifert as a friend and Sgt Akbar as probably my only personal enemy.

CPO (Join to see) - I didn't hate Embed's, but I did not like having the extra task of watching over him every time we went out on a Patrol or Overland Supply run and then his getting thousands or maybe millions for telling about my friend's death (among other things) while my friend's wife & baby/toddler were at home possibly barely getting by waiting on the Life Insurance that was most likely held up because of the circumstances of his death (He wasn't technically killed by enemy fire since we were still in Kuwait at the time).
