it be nice but employers care more about the bottom line is specially if they are not veterans. It seems like they want you to choose between the military or civilian career when you have both and they should shut the f up and think good things when we go to training or to ask to go to training or if we get mobilized. I was actually happy to get mobilized to get away from my civilian job and to go on active duty for almost 3 years and I start a new career in Canada because of the employer asking me to choose between the Army National Guard or my career.

Since I am self employed, my employer is the greatest at giving me days off.

NO! we are required to take civilian leave on Veterans day or I guess work that day, would suck being the only vet working on this day while everyone else is off. Only thing we get is a message from our 2 star wishing all the veterans who served our country or are still serving Happy Veterans Day. I don't really think anyone is really going to walk up to me and say Happy Veterans Day, But I will tell my father who served two tours in Korea, proud he with us today, I know he hates to talk about it but I can see it in his eye that it was a bad place and he is not proud to be veteran, I know this, My case I am, with my tours in Iraq and Kuwait and Desert Storm, I someday can tell my little girl about what I've been through for now, she just know I served.

Sgt Terry Hall My employer did not have any Veteran's Day activities. I would go to my University, University of Houston-Clear Lake, where I participated in Veteran's Day activities. We usually had a Marine Corps Birthday celebration each year, that was put together by Marines.

Sgt Terry Hall, my employer doesn't recognize Veterans Day as a holiday, and it's highly unlikely that any recognition activities will take place locally. I'm not sure as to what recognition activities will take place at the home office in New York, if any.
Our city will have a Veterans Day parade, and I could take a day off and go to observe, but nothing official (or unofficial) will take place in my office!
We'd all like to think that such a day would be significant to others, but with less than 1% of the U.S. population having ever served, it doesn't seem to generate a lot of traction any longer.

Being retired, I have everyday off.
I feel that all private and public sector organizations should shut down for Veterans Day. Not so people can go shopping for sales but so they can think about and thank veterans.

No... never expect a civilian to understand what it means to be a veteran. And If you feel the need to be lauded for the rest of your life for serving, well, you need help.

I think that everyone honors Veterans in their way. Sometimes it's through a handshake or a pat on the back. It's important to know that those who walk the streets and work in buildings were once apart of an incredible force and that person and the ideal needs to be recognized.

I don't know if my employer honors veterans. I've been thanked but not had special treatment.

As Veterans I do not believe that any of us really expect any kind of recognition. We did what we did for us and our country. It is nice when our employeers do recognize us but it would be nice sometimes.

Even something as simple as a company email thanking vets is appreciated. My first year with this company though so we shall see. I will be taking the day off as PTO anyway, as i do every year to spend time with other vets.

Heck yes!! In fact, 'we' don't need a holiday nor do we crave the attention. If someone wishes, they can thank us any time of year. Handshake, hug, talking for a while. Sure the day is great for doing so in extraordinary ways. Don't wait to thank a Veteran.

It would be a nice gesture but I would rather see more effort put into educating the younger generations of the true meaning of Veterans Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day etc.

Dear RALLY POINT,

I posted the other day a comment that I need to take back because my agency dose honor Veterans Day, they just asked us to take leave the day before because no one will really be here on that day. I miss re the leave policy letter that was sent out to us. I asked for Veterans Day off and my boss came to me desk the morning told me that " You already have that day off."
SHOCKED!

Since retiring from active duty, I miss most holidays, including those honoring our Veterans. The first job I had, I would always take Veteran's Day, or the Marine Corps Birthday off. Oddly, the other supervisor always would say, you rate it more than I do, you did twenty and are a combat vet. So he would work, as one of us had to be there. I would send emails out to Honor all the Veteran's and wish all the Marines Happy Birthday, and get a few replies back, but nothing really from the corporation…although the office would acknowledge it. Basically the same at the next job. Sad that we are going further and further in the wrong direction.

I worked for Southwestern bell. Their idea of celebration of Veterans day is to pass out lapel pins

My employer provides 8 hours of special leave on that day. If we aren’t able to use it on that day, we must use it or lose it NLT 30 Aug of that following year.
