Good morning all. I was thinking after reading SGM Wettstein post this morning.
Do you think it would be a good idea to hire the Doctors and PA's that were active military members to be the Doctors that work at the VA? Or at least have them as the head doctors at the Va and all major decisions on a veteran health issues would have to go through them for final say so.
They would be able to relate to us veterans more, because they would understand us more. I think it would also be a good job to hire the nurses that were veterans also and the medics.
One it might cut down on problems that we have when we go to the doctor for a check up or to the ER for a problem.
Me for one I know I have almost cussed out the nurses in the ER who didn't want to listen what I had to say and she though she knew more about my situation then I did. The best ER visit I had was when I went this week and my nurse was a veteran and he was training a new nurse coming on. The doctor was a good one also.
One problem they did have though, a veteran came it with chest pains and they helped him but when they tried to admit him they couldn't. There was no doctor on the floor for one and the doctor who was suppose to work the floor had gone home. They ended up sending him to the naval hospital and admitted him there. I've talked to other veterans here in Virginia and they have had similar problems with the hospital here. I know the hospital in Salisbury NC is a good hospital but you have to be dieing to get admitted. They only have 35 beds in the main hospital so that is a problem at some of the VA hospitals also. Would just like to get everyone's input on this and find a way to get our government look at the plus it would be to have veterans serving veterans.

Absolutely... My wife a Navy reservist physician quit her private practice taking a big pay cut to join VA so that she could give best physician service to our fellow sailors. She is happier than ever that she is making a difference in the lives of our fellow soldiers. A fellow soldier know the issues facing soldiers better than any civilian who has never served.

My ex husband, a retired 06 USAF worked at the Audie Murphy hospital here in SA for 20 years after retiring. Although it may have helped some that he was/is a VET too, doctors are different creatures...they are there to help the patient no matter who they are...no matter what race/nationality/gender etc....
My ex was the OIC/Chairman of the Emergency room and Wilford Hall medical center. After getting out and having a private practice and moonlighting for ER's around town, he went to the VA....but he did not in any way want to be admin...or head of the ER dept at the VA...
Doctors like to be hands on till they cannot be hands on any longer and then they resort to taking a "desk job."...such as my God Daughters father who is a retired 06 OBGYN surgeon. When he retired he took a "desk job" due to tremor in his hands and he could not longer be a "hands on" doctor. He elected not to work for the VA, but instead went to Humana Military which is here is SA too.
I think or feel that it would be better for the VA to have more or most of or the majority of their employees to be a Veteran. I believe that VETS may treat other VETS with more respect and honor than a non vet...

I can tell you there are great providers both in and out of uniform. Similarly, there are oxygen thieves wearing stethoscopes as well. I would have no qualms being sent to a VA for my drill weekend and would even volunteer to work extra hours for free. I say tap the Guard. There has to be a way to credential us though. It would be a band-aid solution. If you are the best facility, you will attract the best talent...if you are well paid.

Yes very true also. I know while I was in Puerto Rico I went to the VA there and I know for a fact that if I wouldn't have been sent back to BAMC by Tri-Care I wouldn't be here today because the doctors over there acted like they didn't even care about what was going on n while I was in the ER there the nurses were more interested in checking Facebook and Twitter on government computers than doing there jobs.
