Difficult to say he was the "Greatest" since so many great champions came before him. What is certain is that many a conversation has been made around the water cooler about the what if's. Makes for a fun conversation.
I still have mixed thoughts about him avoiding the draft when so many went before and after him.

Yes Sir we certainly had a lot of conversations around the water cooler when Ali refused his draft notice he received during the Vietnam War and he went on TV and claimed he had nothing against the Viet Cong or North Vietnamese & could not see himself killing them. And I knew guys who had just returned from Vietnam who told me they changed to civvies in the Airplanes restrooms bringing them back from Saigon because they were all warned the receptions at the US Airports could be rough to take...

well at least he manned up, alot went to canada, he stood up to his beliefs and paid the price, many of our current and past govt officials skated out, without penalty, some even embelished thier time in vietnam, for me ali did what he thought was right, and was willing to pay for it as far as boxing there were many greats, and many other gold medalist in the olmypics, just my thoughts

Yea but Ali said he was not just the "Greatest" but the Greatest of All Time"....& people all over the world agree. I saw all his fights and interviews on TV with Howard Cosell and Ali did admit he used the term "Greatest" as just a lark and in reality was a very humble and nice man. Don't forget Ali did a lot for those he thought were having a tough time just making ends meet. But was hit with Parkinson's when he was only 42 years old
