He required a mental health waiver in order to enlist. How can the Army enlist a person who is not "right in their mind" and then expect them to be perform to standards? I feel the injustice was done when the DA approved his waiver for enlistment. I feel that he should indeed receive a pardon. As for the fallout....well only time will tell. Do I think a law abiding citizen, veteran or not, would choose to spend the rest of their life in prison for attempting to or succeeding at causing harm or death to Bergdahl....My heart says, no. But the actions of some of our citizens, veterans or not, tells me that the chances are extremely high for something terrible to happen. But to make a choice to incarcerate him based on his safety is the wrong answer as well. I don't feel he should be going to a court marshall because of his diagnosed mental state. As a taxpayer, I simply do not want to pay the cost of keeping him in prison. Food, clothing, medical care, not to mention electric water, and staff expenses just to name a few. I am not saying he should be given an honorable discharge or anything like that. I would prefer to see discharge in lieu of court martial. Locking him up for decades is expensive and frankly he isn't worth the cost. As far as the argument that people were killed looking for him. The Army has repeatedly stated that they had nothing to support that claim. We all know if they did, they would have used it at his Article 32 hearing but they did not. I can understand the anger at this guy. I really wonder how much of it is misdirected at him because someone far higher than him traded 5 terrorists for him.
