When I was stationd in Korea in 2008 my S-3 OIC told me that the MOS 74D was a useless MOS. the MOS is mis-understood and covers so much. As an NCO I had always pushed the training for Chemical and BIO, my biggest fear is what happens when we acutally need it and no one is trained? The biggest problem comes for the Mech infantry and Armor units as their TTPS. If the higher ups actually understood the purpose and use of the JLIST is only good for 8 to 24 hours and is for getting out of the contaminated area quickly as possible. The Chemical Biological I thing if kept up to date is of some use. These are cheap weapons that a non state entity might find appealing until the first time they sued them in combat. The wind doesn't take sides. On the Nuclear issue the US dumped their tactical nuclear weapons back in 1988, one of the smartest decisions the Pentagon ever made, we should get rid of the rest of our nuclear weapons…If you combine all the nuclear weapons in the world there is still not enough to even disable just our coastal cities and infrastructure. The concept that nuclear weapons could destroy humanity is just nonsense. I doubt that even the combined nuclear weapons of China and Russia is enough to disable the United States. A 74D shouldn't use the JSLIST at all, we have level suits to do missions with. A high percent of unit don't have the proper equipment (Level Suits) for us to to our job so we use JSLIST to fight our fight which makes us work 20x harder. Most CBRN leaders don't notify when it come to exevals and training that we shouldn't be using JSLIST. our Cbrn equipment isn't army wide. Most Cbrn units have old gear and equipment. First, the logistical challenge of even decontaminating a tank PLT with no organic or attached decon units becomes a brigade line of effort. Second, while JSLIST is proven effective in contaminated environments, the limitations of its effectiveness present a significant risk decision on battalion commanders when planning for decontamination, namely in consideration of time available. Finally, unless the TTPs are thoroughly understood, well instructed, and viciously enforced, it is very easy to miss the mark of "as low as reasonably acceptable" when your decon operators are not 74 series Soldiers. In conclusion, our TTPs are effective but the conditions that must be set in order to achieve a reasonable decontamination present a significant challenge to commanders. Unless force modification adjusts standard unit manning and equipping to be more responsive to a threat with chemical weapons capabilities, our TTPs completely reliant on extremely capable leaders and commanders and Soldiers who are willing to listen.
