He's a known liar. While he could have ordered it directly, I think he prefers to use the indirect approach and just facilitate his loyalists' ability to commit wrongdoing and get away with it.

Just as he did in the election, he didn't actually tell his followers to commit election fraud. Obama just opened up the border, refused to enforce Federal Immigration Law, shot down Voter ID Laws, and left it up to his minions to do whatever they saw fit. If you're not cheating, you're not trying. To Democrats, the end justifies the means.

Yes, But... I don't think he's that stupid to get directly involved. I'm sure there are plenty of surrogates willing to fall on the sword to give him what he needs. This was evident with the IRS. Not saying this happened, but what if an "investigation" was started by a surrogate to look at suspect Russian ties to the Trump tower, knowing that legitimate conversations would be taking place but still pushing a perception of a Trump/Russian collusion. Better yet, let's say it was all a legitimate investigation which came up with no wrong doing but an Obama surrogate who has access to the info decides to push it out to the media to again, create that perception of a Trump/Russia collusion.

Regardless, the fact is, someone illegally gave information to the media from a highly classified and controlled source. They need to be rooted out and removed.

Two things here. He could have ordered directly or said something like "I sure would like to hear what he is saying" both cause action. The first is a legal go do it order, the second is a wish that gives plausible deniability should he get caught...he didn't tell anyone to do it, they did it on their own. More likely, the NSA and others collect a boatload of metadata and someone with an ax to grind and access went on a fishing expedition, found some stuff that would be embarrassing to POTUS, then leaked it (true or not) to the press.
This, if true, violates a number of federal statutes and is a felony... probably several.
The list of folks with access is pretty short, so identifying the leaker shouldn't be terribly difficult.

We will never know the truth unless someone like Snowden gives us a clear look at the facts without the rose colored glasses that both parties issue to their members. If this is true, then all those involved need to go down and never ever work for or near the government again. I have lost a lot of respect for the DOJ, FBI and the other intelligence and law enforcement agencies at the FED level. What I once thought were agencies, that worked to help keep us safe and root out criminals, has seemed to be children caught up in school yard drama, lies, undermining legitimate government and using the USC for toilet paper. Could he? yes. Would he? probably so if it appeared to be necessary. Did he? That's the question. I don't know why someone in government has not yet confirmed whether a FISA warrant was even granted. Mark Levin, conservative media, BBC and The Guardian say the Obama WH tried for a warrant but were denied in summer and obtained one in October. I've read that these warrants are highly classified, but even FBI Dir. Comey has asked for somebody at DOJ to clear it up. One thing is certain though - that we aren't discussing the new EO, the proposed changes to ACA, or N Korean missiles.

I do know Obama and his minions received, and released to the media, sealed court documents concerning Congressman Jack Ryan and his wife’s divorce and custody arrangements during the 2004 Illinois senatorial campaign. The fact that he publicized the accusations concerning Ryan’s divorce without proof is an indication of how low he could stoop. Ryan was several points ahead of Obama in the campaign and would have won the seat had Obama not publicized the sealed court documents. I wouldn’t put anything past Obama and his little buddies.

It would be nearly impossible. If done legally, with a FISA warrant, there would be clear records for all to see, plus one or more US Attorneys would have been involved. If done illegally, without a warrant, too many people would know and would talk. As an attorney who has worked at NSA and with intelligence at the highest level in both Republican and Democratic administrations I do not believe that anyone in the Community would break their oath and be involved in such illegal activities. I think what really matters is that we need an independent organization, perhaps composed of retired judges, to investigate the crimes of the rich and politically connected. The reason we continue to let politicians commit crimes is because we always demonize the other side while giving a pass to our politicians.

Nixon erased 18 minutes of tape. Clinton erased 33,000 emails. How is it that one resigned and the other gets a pass?

But we have the current system where politicians have legions of lawyers to explain why the law doesn't apply to their client or why their client should get a pass BECAUSE we want our politician to get a pass.

Once campaign staff were communicating with Russians, they were fair game for NSA/FBI surveillance. Was Obama aware of the wiretap? Probably, as a result of him being briefed in his PDB on matters that he should be aware of. If you communicate with Russians, you should expect your phone to be monitored both by the Russian state security, and our own. It matters not whether the Russian is within the US when you communicate with them. If you want to be accurate you would say - under Obama, the FBI and NSA were monitoring various individuals in Trump's campaign as a result of communication with Russians. So if you want to use the notion that as president, all activities of the executive branch are done on his authority, then you could say he "had" Trump's campaign/tower tapped. That's the logic used against Hillary for Benghazi, though she actually had no involvement in the security decisions for the post. It's sort of like blaming the 4-star for something a colonel down in his command screwed up on.

If what you're really asking is whether Obama ordered the surveillance of Trump's campaign as some sort of political move, no. Don't be an idiot. Think about it. Why would he risk the scandal? He didn't need to order surveillance when Trump's people had already qualified for surveillance through their own activities. If the idea is that Obama tapped their phones to gain some sort of advantage for Hillary's campaign by funneling confidential campaign info, you're insulting a lot of intelligence professionals who oversee these programs with integrity. And that would also leave a glaring question: why did she lose?

Absolutely, as a Naval Officer in the Intelligence community and understanding presidential powers, FISA courts, and tapping requirements, I have no doubt in my mind that there were shenanigans going on from both parties. All he needs is a court order. A candidate for POTUS is just a guy. He deserves the protections afforded to him by the constitution. That's it. If a lawyer can convince a judge that one particular guy is a scumbag, the judge may rule that certain of those protections may be suspended while we have a sniff.

Unfortunately, given the Patriot Act and FISA, the Executive Branch can essentially wire-tap nearly every citizen. The laws assume that all actors are biased towards protecting our country, enforcing our laws and respecting the rights of citizens. However, people and political groups can act without respect to laws or rights. As a proof, we need to just review the multitude of 'gun control' laws that are contrary to the 2nd Amendment as well as 'civil forfeiture' laws that are contrary to the 4th, 5th and 6th Amendments. Finally, proof of this possibility lies in the fact that only one party (GOP) and one candidate (Trump) is being investigated. If the true concern is whether foreign countries have managed to influence our elections, then all parties and candidates would be investigated. Unfortunately, it appears that there may be ample evidence that one candidate and party did collude/conspire with foreign countries prior and during the election. But, that party and candidate are not being investigated.

Yes - given probable cause he could have and would have done so through an appropriate FISA letter or warrant. All of the facts that have come out suggest there would have been probable cause for a Judge or FISA court to issue such a warrant.

However, both the unrestrained prejudice of the likes of McConnell and the comments in open fora such as this one clearly demonstrate that legality was less important (it would have been legal) than the turmoil it would have created if he had done so.

Remember that the Senate and House, McConnell and Ryan, both knew of FBI concerns and of potential business and financial irregularities that have since been adjudicated and found to have occurred. Trump charities are barred in NY.

For those here squawking about Obama being a liar, and Obama's "loyalists" - you do yourselves and your branch a dis-service by failing to maintain the understanding that your oath was to the COUNTRY and the CONSTITUTION. Yes, I do believe he could have ordered it because he knew Hillary, who was also in on it, was going to be elected President and she would use her executive powers to keep it from being discovered. What neither of them counted on was Trump being elected, and it was President Trump who found out about it when an honest person working at the NSA who knew it was wrong, briefed Trump on it. But even if Obama didn't order it, he had to know about it because, as President, he got daily intelligence briefings from the heads of NSA, CIA, FBI, etc., and spying on a presidential candidate, with no legal basis whatsoever for the spying, is too big of an issue to keep from the President. The bigger question is, Do you think the heads of our national intelligence agencies would risk not only their careers but serious prison time by illegally spying on the sitting President's parties' rival candidate without the President having their backs?

It is well within the realm of possibility given the pattern of things that occurred during his administration with regard to several of his key officials and his actions since leaving office. Speaking as an experienced former all-source intelligence analyst and member of the original PURPLE DRAGON OPSEC Team at CINCPAC, I not only think he could have, I think he did. Why? Among other reasons, because he was a self-acknowledged acolyte of Saul Alinsky, as well an experienced instructor on Alinsky's Leftist "Rules for Radicals" radicalist principles. Such an action would have been entirely consistent behavior.

I got a flash of insight near mid-2016 that he was privy to surveillance information as a result of having watched him on TV. Although I have forgotten the exact words, I remember having almost instinctively and inadvertently blurted out to my wife, "He's got Trump under surveillance," after being suddenly struck with the idea that what he had just said, he could not have known without illicit access to the information. Here's the thing, many of us middle of the road guys who try to keep it non-political and have voted for good leaders on both sides of the aisle, would be happy to see any scumbag 'justly' prosecuted, left or right. But we should start with the sitting President Trump.
He has made nearly 20,000 false or misleading statements since entering office. His inaction has contributed to the deaths of tens of thousands of Americans via Covid-19 on our own soil. He stood in front of the country and told us to inject disinfectants, drink bleach, and stick light inside our bodies.; all of which are lethal to humans. He ordered troops to quell peaceful protests, which is a right enshrined in the constitution which we were sworn to uphold. He had protesters cleared off the mall with tear gas and rubber bullets for a photo op in front of a church holding a bible upside down and backwards. He is a clear and present danger to this country. His own former Chief of Staff and retired Marine General John Kelly, who was my Commandant and his former Sec Def, also a retired Marine General James Mattis have both left the administration, as well as many dozens of others, because the find him to be an immoral and anti-constitutional president. Their commitment to serve the American constitution meant that they can no longer serve this president. That should inform you as to what a train wreck this assclown is. I don't believe Obama wie-tapped Trump. However it is not because he didn't have reason. The intelligence community became aware of Russian interference on his behalf in our election in the fall. They also saw that members of Trumps campaign had been speaking with Russians in the USA and in Europe. The latest Trump instigated investigation by came back with the conclusion that the interference was substantial and justified and Trump's people had over 100 contacts with Russians
Don't forget his statement during the debates wishing that the Russians would find Hillary's missing files and one day later Wikileaks exposed files from the Democratic party.
IM from NYC and all knew that Trump had been near bankruptcy several times. The last time he was bailed out by Deutche Bank and Russian oligarchs who helped finance the Trump Soho with loans and purchases of condos.
He was involved with Russians up to his neck.
So, while Obama had reason to tap his phone i don't believe he did. This i because he withheld everything and allowed the election to run its course. This may partially because he believed Trump wouldn't win but it is also because he is a constitutional scholar and thought it would set a terrible precedent.
Donald Trump is a racist as was his father. There is a picture of his father at a KKK rallybin the early 50's. He and his father built federally funded housing for the middle class with clauses that prohibited Black people from ever buying them.
As for the litany of issues cited above, how is it that Trump has been found to have lied or exaggerated important information over 20,000 times while the right Obama was cited less than 15 times during his 8 years including from right wing media. They may have disagreed with his policies but didn't impugn his integrity.
It is no accident that his favorite leaders in the world are Orban of Hungary, Bolisano of Brazil, Duerte of the Phillipines, Erdogan of Turkey, Kim of N. Korea and of course his favorite Putin. These are all autocrats who have taken power by demonizing minorities and refugees, undermined journalists and played on the fears and prejudices of the people. They also manipulated the government to benefit the wealthy. Sound familiar?

Trump would have to convince a federal judge to authorize the wiretap, and the chance is very slim to highly improbable that any judge would issue court ordered surveillance of a former U.S. president. That's judicially very risky. Especially since Obama still has a security clearance and unfettered access to the federal government apparatus. Interestingly, Obama, prior to leaving office, finalized new rules that allow the National Security Agency to share information it gleans from its vast international surveillance apparatus with the 16 other agencies that make up the U.S. intelligence community, firming up the changes before Trump took office to make it harder for the incoming president to encroach even further on civil liberties.

The bottom line up front is yes. President Obama could have ordered Trump to be wiretapped during his election campaign just as President Trump could have known and kept quiet about the 2016 elections with his Russian buddies. Its been going on since J. Edgar Hoover instructed his goons to wiretap MLK, Malcolm X, and anyone else they deemed a threat. Richard Nixon was no better with the Watergate scandal. We went to war to find weapons of mass destruction and didn't find one bomb, a slingshot, or nuclear mosquitoes. All we found was Hussein in a spider hole and a bunch of hell and death from a group of people who hated us so much they violated our freedom when they attacked us. Now we have a man in office who loves to gloat about what he does while the poor get poorer and the rich get richer. Can anyone really agree with Amazon, Walmart, and entertainment artists like Kanye West receiving billions of dollars to support and bail out their business while the small business owners take a nosedive and crash along with their staff? WTH! We spend more time arguing over BS than addressing the real issues at hand. President Trump's administration was aware of bounties on the heads of US Soldiers by the Russians but no one has addressed that. What could a commander or CSM say to the family members of one of their own killed under this bounty, knowing the administration knew about it and did nothing? Why are staff members of the Trump administration unable to persuade their boss to not send US troops to control civilians who are protesting over the murder of an innocent man in the streets by the very people sworn to serve and protect? To add insult to the injuries the people have already endured, he goes before the US Supreme Court to make a last-ditch effort to disband Obama care. Why? So the American people can really fall into an extreme state of anarchy? Focus on the pandemic and how to combat this so we can get back to the business at hand. It's not like President Trump didn't receive a playbook from the last administration on how to prepare and protect against a possible pandemic. Damn! Did he do it outright? Probably not? If anything it would have been a wink, wink, nudge, nudge sort of arrangement. Will it ever be proven? Probably not. It's most unlikely that it will be proved or disproved.

We know the wiretapping was done. That much is pretty clear. Was it done on orders of the president? We may never know for sure. Even IF he did, I am sure it was done in a way that would provide plausible deniability. I am also sure even if some flipped on Obama, any leaks/action before Nov 3 will be chalked up to politics.

Could he have? Yes. It is possible. A wiretap is not hard to do. It's hard to to paper trail and legal wise but easy otherwise. You simply work back a phone junction for land lines and isolate his number or numbers. For the case of cell phones it is a bit more hi tech but again can be done.

Likely it was not done on direct official orders so as to keep deniability.
