Do you think that the military should hold a soldiers last paycheck for audit reasons.?

This does seem like it would be an easy program to abuse. If you already have the money, it's easier to hold onto for petty reasons than relinquish back to the soldier who rightfully earned it. If anything, I don't like the pay-it-all-upfront style they currently use for reclaiming debts owed to the Army. It puts a lot of financial pressure on soldiers, especially outgoing soldier's who are likely experiencing a significant shift in their income. We need to take care of our own at all times, even when they're leaving our ranks. Having an incremental pay-off schedule is the just thing to do.

You are continuously audited. It's not like your last month the Army says, ok lets take a look at the last 20 years and see if you owe something. They do that continuously. I've had 7 cents taken out of my LES for an overpayment of something. When you owe it they take it. If you owed something else major you wouldn't have been able to clear in the first place.

All that to simply say "No."

For audit no, but if the soldier has an outstanding debit it will be paid before he/she leaves the Army?

ALL, PLAN FOR YOUR FINAL PAY ACCORDINGLY. I have read comments from others on this subject and they are misinformed. People, here is the deal: If you are soon to retire or transition from the service, The Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) WILL hold your final paycheck for an audit period of 30 to 45 days AFTER your final day of active duty.

During your final month of active duty, you will receive your normal "mid-month" pay with the final "half" going into a "Hold" status on or about the 10th of that final month. The hold is to ensure that YOU don't owe the government money and vice versa; (unpaid leave, allowances, etc.) This process is not included in your separation orders or briefings nor is it covered in your "Finance Retirement Fact Sheet" that your local DFAS office should provide to you.

Our pay is monitored and audited continuously but it does not matter with your final paycheck. It is ludicrous that this is normal SOP for DFAS, however it is in effect and will affect you and your family. Ensure you have enough savings set aside to circumvent this jackassery. This ridiculous process would never fly in the civilian world. Take care, and good luck. Army Strong!
