Do you think we have troops in Afghanistan for the long term, just like Korea and Japan? Do you think we should?

If you go that route, then every piece of propaganda the ISI, Talliban, etc. are using will become truth- " coming to subjugate us, destroy and defile our religion, etc."

In Korea and Japan we were fighting Korea and Japan with some outside actors or assistance. In those wars you could win by holding land or decimating the enemy. In Afghanistan we are fighting an ideology. I'm not sure how much more stable that country would actually be if we left troops there. Not to mention with our capabilities today Kuwait is a perfectly fine place to keep troops that can respond to any threat immediately without the threat of loss of life.

I'd rather us withdraw. The best thing we can do is cut off funding for extremist groups by cracking down on the opiate trade, shattering the CIA into a million pieces, and severely punishing bankers who even considering sending monetary resources to religious zealots with funny beards. Hand power over to the Afghan people, let them carry out kangaroo courts and summary executions on anyone who entertains the idea of "Jihad" or a Caliphate.
As for Japan, they should be aloud to have a proper military once again (as long as they don't start a third Sino-Japanese war).
