Their online claims communication, their response time when resolving an auto accident claim are superior.

My only beef with them was when I was a recent incident (100% not at fault, guy ran a stop sign and T-boned me). I have rental coverage - up to 30 days when repairing or 1 week after declaring the car totaled. after 23 days in repair, they "suddenly" declared my car totaled. 1 week was not enough time to find a replacement car and I didn't have the check at the end of that week. I was hard headed and with many other banking and insurance institutions over my life, 51 now, and I suspect I will never ever go elsewhere. My step-daughter was a financial wreck, credit score of like 300 and wanted a car. USAA loaned her the $$ due to my accounts statuses (insurance and banking) at a 1.5% rate when any other bank would have been over 20% and possibly not at all. Their response was customer satisfaction which is why I left other banks when divorcing and they would not back me up. They're responsive, caring, and fair. I had a laptop die in theater, and they gave me a very good valuation for it (covered under the home policy). I've been in a few small auto accidents over the years, and they have been quick and attentive whether it was my fault or not. This past winter, a fire suppression sprinkler pipe froze while we were out of town, completely destroying nearly half our house. While other people with similar problems waited sometimes months just to get an appraisal from their insurance, we had all repair work done and were moved back in with a comfortable check to replace lost property in less than 3 months. That's on an over $100k claim (not counting personal property), and they even ran good interference on the problematic water remediation company, which was not even one of their in-network companies.

Bottom line: I would trust them any day. If you're debating whether USAA is right for you, you're wasting time. The answer is Yes!

The only negative I've had on USAA is that they have very, very few banking locations. If all I need is an ATM, I'm fine; they have or are partnered with ATMs all over, and they refund ATM fees up to $15/month (and charge none themselves). If I need to talk to a teller or other in-person agent, the only ones available for me (central MD) are next door to the Pentagon or a block away from the Naval Academy. My kids (ages 34 to 45) all have USAA insurance. We also have USAA Federal Savings Bank accounts.
One nice program I like is buying my cars through their auto buying service. The last one I bought had the dealership moaning about how the USAA guaranteed price cut their profit to zero (yeah, right. They still make an adequate profit, I'm sure) and there was really no haggling until they got to their real profit makers like service plans, etc. At that point you just have to be firm with the dealership and say "no." USAA provides a sight draft for the purchase price of the car so it is the same as a cash deal for the dealership. Their auto loan rates are among the lowest, particularly if you maintain a bank account with them. Their on-line banking is super, too.
Since USAA is member owned, membership also includes a "cash distribution" feature in which the excess over and above the necessary insurance cash reserves is apportioned back to the members each year. Since I have several different account types with them, that usually results in a nice little chunk of extra cash just before Christmas. This is the first USAA thread I've read anywhere that had no complaints. Usually I run into at least one poster who's incensed over an auto repair.

Every year USAA invites 20-30 bloggers and social-media mavens to their San Antonio HQ for presentations & previews. I've found cousins & shipmates working there, and they're absolutely thrilled with the employee quality of life. (The biggest complaint: long walks across hot parking lots in August.) I've learned a lot about insurance & finance products from their staff. I'm not looking for a job, but if I was then I'd want to work at USAA. If you're a veteran or military spouse who's even mildly interested in living near a USAA service center (or in San Antonio) then contact them for an interview. They're trying to boost their military hiring rate to 30% of the new employees.

Believe it or not, profit is not the motive. All compensation is tied to member service, not "growth" or "claims payout ratio" or other cut-throat metrics. The key is automating the most common member service (and using tech to reduce the costs) while offering exceptional service in emergencies. I downloaded the USAA app just to test-drive their accident reconstruction tool-- you can file a claim before the tow truck even arrives.

On the customer side, we have three generations of Nordmans with USAA. I manage my Dad's finances as his conservator, and they are the ONLY company that understands the difference between guardian & conservator-- and the only company that didn't laugh and hand me a new stack of forms to have notarized. The member rep handled the money transfers over the phone and even walked me through the first CD purchase. Outstanding, and a huge relief after the typical conservator experience.

If you have a question about "Why does USAA do that?!?" or some other feature, I can either answer it or go find out for you. Most of their new products are driven by member questions and requests. However, the negative ones tend to stand out. Before I delve into that, I will also supply the fact that I will most likely not change my banking, home or vehicle insurance w/o a significant reason (saving a few bucks is insufficient).

So, the negatives:
when I was robbed (vehicle break-in) during a PCS move, USAA car insurance took care of the vehicle portion wonderfully. Since this was a partial-DITY, I had several valuable items taken (most not replaceable) and others destroyed. Although I fully documented all stolen/destroyed items (complete w/costs, actual and replacement), USAA only reimbursed me 1/3 of the amount I accounted for. [side note: perp was caught, sentenced, etc and the judge provided for some restitution ( less than 10% of actual damages) with the reason that I "had insurance"]
In the aftermath, I took note that my new homeowners insurance (for my new home) was increased. No doubt to 'recover' the meager amount I was paid.
Due to so many PCS's, I also took note that my car insurance increased with every move. WY to FL (up), FL to MD (UP) MD back to FL (UP), FL to NE (up) NE to MD (UP), MD to KY (up)
Now, the vehicles, drivers and even the addresses/zip were the same in some cases; the only change was the year. I question this every time and get no satisfactory answer.
I will not get other credit cards. Even my local credit union has a sweet deal from time to time but why add another card? I have nothing but good things to say about them. We went for years without a claim and then a hail storm rolled through here with hail the size of base balls. It destroyed our roof and the tops of two trucks we owned. We had a little problem getting the right adjustor at first but they wound up replacing the roof with a 50 year roof since that was what was on our house and restored the two trucks and you couldn't even tell they had hail damage. About two years later an employee where I worked t-boned my 2006 C6 Z06 Corvette. He just happened to also be covered by USAA. I stopped by a auto body shop I knew on the way home and they said go ahead and leave it. I've had a couple successful claims with them, and though I feel like they low balled me when I negotiated for vehicle replacement price, they handled each claim professionally, and when I was not at fault, it was basically a phone call and perhaps an email or two, and they handled everything else on their end.

All of that said, my friends complain more and more frequently about their claims, and in several cases of which I'm aware of the details.
