While the primary mission of OPFOR is to assist commanders in preparing their units for combat, they (all such Trainjng Centers) have deployed their elements in support of various combat environments. How often and under what circumstance fluctuates, but it does happen. Thank you for your service. The Blackhorse as a unit began returning to Irwin from their deployment to Iraq. I remember a national guard unit that was called up to serve as OPFOR in the box while the Blackhorse was on deployment. I think the guard unit was apart of the Nevada Army National Guard.

There are more comments about Irwin that I posted a couple of years ago that could be helpful to you. M. Bryant, someone has already said it on here, but they did deploy. Twice to my knowledge. Not as an entire regiment however. The 11th ACR replaced TF Olympia in Mosul in 2005. 1-Star command up there. Then portions of the regiment deployed during the surge. Not all of it. The Army was trying to solve a huge problem it had in rotations to Iraq and Afghanistan and one part of the solution was deploying the 11th ACR. Unless there is another war that empties all available active and guard units, they won't deploy. That being said, they are in the field 6-8 months out of the year. That means it they can deploy. As a current 11 ACR leader I can tell you that shouldn’t happen as we don’t train to fight like anyone else. The 05 deployment didn’t go so well and I don’t think it would be a good idea to try that again.
