Does anybody have any insight on 91C (for someone looking to reclassify)?

It's one of the hardest MOS to pick up e6 so I've been told by every senior maintenance nco I've talked to. Also, 91 series is all working on the same equipment basically, everyone works together and crosstrains at the unit levels. 91 everything doing 91 all the things a/c, vehicle services, troubleshooting. The Army may separate the specific skill set training but all in all a mechanic is a mechanic.

91c is located at Ft Lee Va it is one of he hardest MOS to rank up in and you do a lot of cross training as well as 91J. 91c AIT usually last 13 weeks . In that amount of time you acquire you 609, 608, and type 1&2 certification for life and it can be used on the civilian side also you will learn the basic troubleshooting skills and different types of machines and also HMVs.

I keep hearing that about the promotions. That's really unfortunate. I do hvac in the civilian world which is why I was considering reclassing to 91c

If you're planning on not making the Army a career then I would say go for the MOS because you will have the opportunity to expand your knowledge and skill set across a broad spectrum of maintenance capabilities. You can then take your knowledge and gain the upper hand in the private sector since you have highly specialized experience. However, if you're planning on making the army a career (unless you're planning on going warrant) I would advise against it.

I kind of find it hard to believe about the promotion aspect of things. I went from E-1 to E-5 in 3 years by doing nothing special at my unit while attending drill.

SGT (Join to see) - I just wanted to point out that the promotion system for Active Duty and Nat'l Guard/Reserves are different. Active uses a point based system and Guard/Reserves use a slot based system. The slot system essentially promotes people that meet the qualifications whenever a slot for that MOS/rank is available. Whether you or another promotable soldier is chosen for a slot is based on seniority and merit. The points based system used in the Active Army is much more complicated (in my opinion) and forces soldiers to be cometitive in other areas besides their MOS, i.e. PT, Weapons Qual, etc.

Not a wise choice most of the equipment is contracted out and you will spend most of your career working outside of your mos
