Does anyone find "shame" in asking for a military discount everywhere they go?

SSgt (Verify To See) - I like wearing my Marine veteran hats also. We went to Ryan's awhile back and the clerk said to me I gave you your military discount instead of senior discount because it is more. That was nice of him.

Absolutely not. I am just surprised that those who offer military discounts do not have that displayed do military members can see it. That would make it stand out. We earned this privilege.

I feel uncomfortable asking. I usually do not ask unless they advertise like Lowe’s. That’s really about the only place I ask, and I still don’t like to.

Went to Texas Roadhouse on Veterans Day with an army veteran. At the end of the meal she thanked him for his service and gave me a ticket for mine. He had to inform her that I'd actually served longer than he did (12 1/2 years. She hadn't even asked us when she took our orders. Boy was she embarrassed. I get looked over a lot as a female veteran.

SGT David Brimmer, MS - Part of the problem could be you look too young in yr photo. Perhaps try adding a bit of grey to yr beard and carry a cane might get you better service.

The way I figured it was I was senior to the kid behind the counter! I'm only 31 but, he's only 17 so that should count for something. :)

In 1954 as a private I made $72.00 a month, yes I would ask for a discount with no shame what so ever

Pvt Billy Baker - By 1959 a Pvts pay had gone up to $85 a month before taxes. In spite of that I always seemed to have enough money to go to the PX, laundry/dry cleaners, and slop-chute.

A1C David Landry - I had already bought a lot of my supplies from HD. But I did get some pretty good deals from a local building supply. Same with a electrical supply. The electrical supply ha a better discount that Lowrs or HD. Thanks for the reply.

MSgt John McGowan - Home Depot gives military discount too, at least in the Ft Campbell area

I feel no shame in asking, that's absurd. I live in the Ft Campbell KY area and it is very pro military/veteran. It's worth a few seconds of my time to ask and save money. I am medically retired and rated100% disabled veteran by VA. As a widow since 1998 with an epileptic son, any savings helps greatly. If it isn't offered, the "Thank you" is much appreciated too!

I know that Lowe's Home Improvement Stores in North Carolina do NOT advertise any kind of Military/Veterans Discount, except on Veteran's Day and Memorial Day. Which is 10% off. However, even though they don't advertise it, NO MATTER what day of the year it is, if you show you Military/Veterans ID. They give you 10% off. No matter what you are buying. Also, let's say you are buying a refrigerator that they have 15% off on it. It cost $1250.00. After they give you their 15% off ($187.50). It brings it down to $1062.50. But after you show your ID, another 10% off ($106.25). You only pay $956.25. Saving you $293.75. Then if you luck up with a manufacturer's rebate that's even more you save. And with the right items tax deductible at the end of the year. So it could be a total win.
So yes, feel free to ask. That's how I learned about Lowe's.
I almost wished there was a place on RP where people that has been there, done that, could put advise without having to be asked. Or after being asked here, we could post it here, then there making it easy for others to find. You know people that have lived it.
