Does anyone have a degree in Agronomy? If so, what military-friendly colleges would you recommend?

After I complete my CCAF, I would like to pursue a Master's degree in Agronomy. I am currently trying to gather as much information as possible so when that time comes, I can immediately start my new goal. Any tips on colleges, courses, or just general gee whiz about this would be greatly appreciated.

Agronomy is not terribly mainstream, so that alone should help weed out the colleges which have no worthwhile accreditation. My only advice is to thoroughly research any college and ensure that their accreditation is both nationally recognized and current! Far too many "colleges" prey on military personnel.

While I don't have a degree in Agronomy, TSgt Melissa Post, I am familiar with some of the other aspects of your question. Look for a land-grant university first (this will ensure a level of friendly support for a military service member). If you are wondering what a "land-grant" school is, search on "Morrill Land Grant Act of 1862" to see what I mean. Then see if the school offers the Agronomy degree you seek. My alma mater, Texas A&M University, does not offer a remote option. However, Iowa State University does. Good luck with your studies!

I'm not remotely connected to agronomy, but I do know that before you choose a major, consider what direction your career will take you. I chose nursing because of an interest in human science as well as the long range goal of always having gainful employment. Your degree will likely require a masters to be competitive.

Being as CCAF is a regionally accredited SVC school I should think you'd have reasonably little difficulty getting it accepted. That being said, it'd help to give you suggestions if you might perhaps be able to elaborate somewhat. Specifically, you major at CCAF, what specific coursework you've done, how much actual hard and or bioscience training you've had, your other genl work background, prior exposure to agronomy and or agriculture generally, etc. Similarly, have you considered food science as a major, alternatively? Or, possibly, mixing agronomy with food science to do a PhD which could be a very viable area, especially if you have interest in either botany and or the biosciences, specifically genetic engineering, for obv reasons. I'll also try to send more shortly, I hope all of this is of interest. I've been told I can sometimes overwhelm on here, which is of course not my intent, certainly, I merely find educ questions like yours of particular interest, honest. So, if I'm overwhelming, please do let me know, and I'll of course either cut back, or redirect, whichever you prefer, certainly, many thanks.

Transitions to civilian higher education after the Army was one of the more difficult things which I did after retiring. Pursuing amasters degree has bee even more difficult than my undergrad. You are starting in the right pace though. Looking for information on which schools for which degrees is a great place to begin. State schools are great, and are covered by the GI Bill, if you want to attend a private college look for schools which are yellow ribbon schools. Also, remember that just iver 25% of enlisted veterans go in to be awarded a bachelors, never mind a masters. Good luck!

For various reasons, I've long had a serious research interest in wound healing in plants, and the analogies between that and wound healing in animal species, it's an area few know of, I'd found generally, other than those directly involved in serious bioscience research, e.g., I'd read of potato tuber infections. If you want to stay in North Dakota, then NDSU in Fargo would be a great choice. Also the University of Minnesota-Crookston, that's about 22 miles east of Grand Forks.

University of South Florida is consistently rated as one of the most military friendly colleges. I attended using the GI bill, and I would agree. Not sure if the have agronomy (I looked quickly, couldn't find it)... but it's also a great place to live when you consider the bang-for-your-buck with BAH.

No agronomy degree here either; however, I can say that many of the Illinois state colleges and Universities have related degree programs and are very military and veteran friendly. Personally, I have experience with both Southern and Northern Illinois Universities. Both were great but SIU has a bit of an edge because they have a number of Capstone programs that will give you credit for your military working experience and CCAF courses. Hi much depends on how related they are to the degree program you pursue. They also use cohorts to help shorten the time you spend in school.

Any of the major land-grant universities would be a great choice. It mainly depends on where you want to settle when you get out of the Air Force. The University of Georgia, Auburn, Clemson, University of South Carolina. etc are just a few of the universities with a long tradition in Agronomy. If you are looking for a smaller school, you might think about Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in south Georgia.

After I retired I went to Murray State University, a regional university here in Kentucky and did a Master's in Horticulture. Loved the program and all the possibilities of the work. Good luck with your choice as there are some great schools out there. I went with the regional school because I liked the smaller class size.
