That can fluctuate a lot depending on your MOS strength, retention, and promotion rate of your seniors to the next higher grade... The only thing you can really do is speak to your representative at the Office of the Chief of Military Intelligence (OCMI) for current projections (still highly speculative). In the mean time, do everything in your power to increase your promotion points so that you're near the top of the list when promotion points do drop. As a rule, the more technical the MOS, the smaller the field, the more you need E4s and the less you need supervisors and NCOs. For instance, if you look at chaplain assistants, there is one E7 for and entire Division.
You promote when a spot opens. A spot opens when some leaves the Army or promotes out of their slot. So a small field of higher rank typically translates into slower promotions for the lower ranks. (this is not true for officers, which is why so many MI officers are branch detailed to Infantry as LTs).
Your best bet is to look at the history of your MOS promotion points. If it has been maexed for a year or more, it's time to find a new job. Think of it as. You have x amount of open slots per month. 798 means no slots open. You have y amount of promotables. Put all of y and arrange them in order of amount of promotion points. Number x ( total number of slots) thats your promotion point cut off. But like SFC Boyd stated. If its slways 798, try to find a new mos.
The point system basically puts everyone in an order or priority to promote but doesn't tell you where you stand in your priority. So look at the trend reports. and make sure you're at the top of the list. I think I can raise my PT score and take more army e-learning classes to raise my score. However, I don’t think I can reach 700 ever. I just Hope points drop under 400 and I’ll be picked. If you want fast promotions then go combat arms (11B, 11C, 12B, 18, 19D, 19K). Those typically hover at 350/450 and sometimes much less. If you are breathing, can qualify well, a few schools then you will make E5/E6 in 5 years or less. Otherwise, you will need correspondence courses, schools, promotion boards, OR just go to Ranger School OR get a college degree. Advancement is purely based on your merit. 1LT Shaun Ray Wed, 13 Feb 2019 00:02:03 -0500 2019-02-13T00:02:03-05:00 Response by SSG Julius H. made Aug 8 at 2019 12:59 PM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/does-anyone-have-an-estimate-as-to-how-long-does-it-take-for-promotion-cut-off-score-to-come-down-from-798-to-anything-attainable?n=4895081&urlhash=4895081

I know this is a late answer but I was just promoted to SSG (AGR) 25U. The points were at 798 for like 8 months then dropped to 325. So I agree with SFC Boyd, it depends on your MOS. SSG Julius H.
