Does anyone have personal experience with the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP)?

We just found out that our child will be born with a condition that will require special medical services. I’ve been trying to do some research about the EFMP program but it seems as if all sites have the same canned message. My supervisor has children in the program and he told me about his experience but our children’s conditions are very different and ours will most likely require more intense medical attention that is somewhat specialized. I know I won’t be able to do a lot before the child is born, but I’m trying to get my ducks in a row. I think planning ahead gives me a sense of control over an uncontrollable situation. I’m not super concerned about how it will affect my career. My child’s health is paramount.

CPT (Join to see) get with FSS and Family Support now. Military OneSource may have some great information as well. Having services lined up before will take the strain off when you need it. Luck brother

CPT (Join to see) Click on the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) tag you put in your original post. SSG Carlos Madden and I posted some information in the ABOUT tab on that page. Depending on your child's medical needs, you may also want to see Family Advocacy Program FAP and Army Community Service ACS. You may qualify for other assistance such as Respite Care to help you and your wife get some relief.
EFMP enrollment is not anything that will hurt your career. There are a wide range of family situations that qualify for EFMP, could be as simple as diabetes to the most challenging medical conditions. It is a resource, leverage it. You may have to make some decisions in the future about assignments but you would not be alone.
Since you know the condition that you will need help with, I'd start laying tracks at EFMP at the MTF right now. There may even be a support group depending on what it is. The care is tailored for the condition, so specific experiences may vary. You may also be able to start shopping for the providers that will be involved after the birth. Good luck Michael.
If you are in government quarters, you may need to let them know what accommodations you will need, or if you need to change quarters.
