Does anyone know good sources for news on Veterans helping their communities?

This is a great place, but i would look in the magazines, websites and news letters of veteran groups such as the VFW, Foreign Legion, DAV and the likes.

I'd go straight to the horses mouth so to say. Check with your local American Legion/Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, and if you're a college town many colleges have student veteran organizations that do great things for the community. My own local university has a group called the Student Veteran Alliance that has been known to do awareness campaigns for veteran suicide, among other community outreach programs.

These are 4 locally here that help communities. And all are either run, established, or manned by veterans.
Any Vet Center in your town should have a list of organizations that help with community events
