Does anyone know of any good Job Searching websites, search engines, and even Networking sites for separating and/or separated military?

I have search on many different sites, and for the most part I find jobs that are generic postings that are old, scams, or minimal wage at best. The jobs that I feel I am qualified to do I am unable to do for all kinds of reasons. As anyone found any sites to be reliable and rewarding.

Web searches definitely have their place, but there's just no substitute for showing up with a well-written resume and trying to speak to someone face to face. Most companies will just take your application, a few won't, and then there are those few where you'll end up interviewing on the spot. Of course, it really depends on what you're looking for. This is kind of a "shotgun" approach, but IMO far more successful than broadcasting electronic resumes & applications.

There are two reasons I give this advice: First, the percentage of jobs that are available, but not advertised on the web is fairly high. Second, on job search sites, a lot (not all, of course) of those that ARE advertised are placed by recruiters/HR simply as fodder so they can tell the company that they reviewed "X" number of resumes in order to find these few choice candidates.

Indeed.com isn't a bad place to start - it's just an aggregator, but a pretty good one.

Glassdoor.com is fairly high quality. I specifically like that you can get company "reviews" from current/former employees.

If you are looking for government jobs, https://www.governmentjobs.com is exceedingly valuable.

If you are willing to PAY and have the background for upper management, theladers.com is actually really good.

I will not bad talk this site, I am still relatively new to it and I have already seen results and options, but having used linkedin for 2 years it is also effective.

You can also become a member of LinkedIn. They have several groups that help with job searches.

Another one that I have not seen mentioned is the Hero 2 Hired website, https://h2h.jobs/, though the website looks like it is experiencing problems right now.

Joshua, pay a visit to your local employment office and ask to speak to the DVOP. He/She should be able to point you in the right direction. Also, check out pinterest.com/nvti. Please note though, that as soon as you put your information on some of those sites, you will be called quite a bit for positions that aren't looking for, as well as positions you may not be qualified for, or even overqualified for.

I encourage my veterans to "network" join "meet-up" groups. I live in the Austin, Tx area and there are hundreds of such groups. Also, I suggest that if you do join one or more groups, don't start off at the first meeting by declaring you are an "unemployed veteran". Sit back and be part of the group make friends first and then turn those friends into possible business contacts or advocates for your cause.

I hope you found a new position after this post. Looks like it’s been a year since you posted. As a Guardsman, I can tell you one of your best options is to network as much as you can. Who you know is more valuable than what you know. Sorry but most of the time, that’s true.

Don’t settle for just talking with a contractor that finds jobs for vets or your state VA employment person. Not to label all of them but many of them have not had a career in the private sector and don’t know how to sell your resume to an employer. Anytime you can find a recruiter from a company that has a job you want, contact them. See what they say. Use LinkedIn to shine and reach out to recruiters. Send your resume to someone in HR and ask for help in making your resume shine.

You need to understand that many private-sector companies don’t understand a military resume. Don’t assume that because you’re military, they want you. Why spend time reading your complex resume about the bla bla fighter wing, when they can skip you and read about a guy that has always been a civilian? People aren’t dying to find vets to fill jobs. Your greatest battle may be finding a job and explaining how you are relevant to a company. Be active active active.

I assume that you are or have made the transition to the civilian job sector. I have also begun and made that transition. I have found that the different sites (Indeed, Zip Recruiter and Monster) are hit or miss. What I did was locate jobs on the different sites, then go directly to their career center and submit my resume/cover letter for that position. If you feel that you are qualified for a job position, submit! Your resume needs to correctly portray your skills and experiences for that position. I would recommend that you go to the virtual job fairs through veteranrecruiting.com. There are over 20 organizations that participate with military advisors and probably the best way for you to make some contacts with organizations that you are interested in. I would recommend that you go to ACP Advisor.net. It is an excellent resource to field your questions about careers and also request a mentor in a location near you and matching interests. I was given a mentor and have received excellent guidance and feedback from him. I would also recommend Hirehereosusa.org. Excellent resource that helped me develop my current resume. If you have linkedIn, build it up and make contacts. I began my transition six months out with these two resources and they have helped receive job offers from companies like GE, BoA and Aramark.

Make sure you get your Free LinkedIn Vets Job Seeker Account. They will boost you a paid subscription for free for a year. I actually found work using the electronic method. The key is keywords. Your resume needs to use every major word in their posting. This is what scans look for, and also make sure you're taking any military jargon out of your resume. I was a clinic NCOIC in my previous life, and changed that to a clinic manager for the civilian world. Warrior Leader Course become human resources training on my resume. Now if I was submitting to a place that was a vet hiring vets, then I used the correct military jargon. I probably put 200-300 hours in developing my resume, and went to my transition counselor and the TAP program for guidance.

There are a lot of good bits of information here.

Remember, whether online or in person (although more effective in person as they get to know you), persistence can pay off. Don't be a pain in the @$$, just persistent. In college I nearly got a job selling cars at the largest dealership in town just because I stopped in to check every week. The only reason I didn't is I ran out of money for school and had to return home (then shortly after enlisted).

Also, as was mentioned, you can possibly find out about 'hidden' positions or requirements that aren't posted. I was thinking of separating after my first tour. I spoke to a police department back home where I'd like to work. If I hadn't talked to them while visiting on leave I would've missed some big details. I was told that, although not listed as requirements on their web page, they rarely hired someone if they didn't have 1) prior military experience (SF/MP not necessary), 2) at least an Associate's degree, and/or 3) passed the law enforcement qualification test (which would be required anyway before being fully accepted). I had 2 of the 3 & would've had to get the third so it didn't bother me, but it was an eye-opener when it comes to job hunting.

Also try to think of ways to creatively market your experience. If you can get the attention of the person hiring, and interview well while being willing to pick up what you don't know quick enough, you could possibly get a job even if it doesn't line up perfectly with your current experience portfolio.

Indirectly LinkedIn. You may not see many job postings BUT it is a great place to network. Find (discussion) groups in areas of the jobs you want and participate in the discussions. Build a solid, "squared away" profile. By all means have a good profile photo - a must. I will not connect with someone who does not have a photo. No photo means you are lazy, hiding something or both.

Whatever state you live in should have something similar to what Iowa has: a Workforce Commission. So, for example, in Iowa I would go to http://www.iwf.gov on the Internet. Supposedly, they have database of ever job registered through each IWF county office. Second to that is a special section just for veterans seeking employment, and employers seeking them. Thirdly, I've been told that the veteran counsellors have something like a real estate MLS cache of jobs around the nation. I got this info from a Brother Mason in my Lodge who once worked in the IWF. At the time, we were trying to find some job suggestions for a young soldier home from Iraq.

you can try usajobs.gov to find a civilian position within the government. You will find jobs all across the country in different government agencys like DOD and DOA. there are a lot of title 5 positions (civilian) and technician positions ( civilian positions that require guard status) the pay for most jobs is pretty decent and your military experience translates extremely well.

Good websites: http://www.indeed.com, glassdoor.com (for research), Ask the Headhunter (blog, to help you with the strategy). Also, TA Online was pretty good the last time I was recruiting for transitioning vets. If you're searching in a specific city, check out which companies are in growth mode. Where do people with your military background (MOS, etc.) tend to do when they get out? There are good websites to help you translate your experiences into something that the civilian world can understand. Good luck!

I am not aware of any "good" sites for jobs, however, it has been my experience that temp agencies are where most employers are actually filling their open positions from. You still have to be careful of scams, don't EVER pay someone to find you a job, they will pay you by charging the employer a usually twice what you're getting paid, and then cut you a check for your time. If you want to use your military experience and don't have a USAJOBS (usajobs.gov) account, you should create one. Veterans get hiring preference in the federal job world, assuming they are otherwise qualified for the position being applied for. If you have geographic mobility this may be the best option for you.

Look for NAF (non-appropriated funds) jobs, too. These include Morale Welfare and Rec, base infrastructure maintenance, housing and BQ management, etc. NAF job announcements are a little harder to find. For Navy, go to the CNIC (Chief, Naval Installations Command) website and search for NAF jobs. I don't know what the other services' equivalents would be.

Then there are the defense contractor choices: Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, CACI, Booz Allen, Aluutiq, and many more. You'll need to go to the individual websites to search for jobs.

If you don't have a Bachelors Degree using the GI Bill, consider that. At least get your A.A. degree. Look for an accredited brick-and-mortar school, not a for-profit technical college or online school. If you want a technical certificate, check out mikeroweworks.com -- Mike Rowe, the "Dirty Jobs" guy, set up this technical and skilled trade clearinghouse site.

Get to the library and check out "What Color Is Your Parachute". This book, around for more than thirty years has been updated dozens of times. It can help you decide what field you may want to enter. That is first. When I used it 23 years ago, it emphasized networking. It was very specific at how to network, what to do and say; today I know they spend a lot of time on the electronic updates and media that are out there. Find friends and relatives that may have information on careers that you find interesting, do some research and then ask them for an informational interview. Keep it short, and ask them who else you should talk to. Remember, this is after you decide what you want to be when you grow up. Good luck, you can do it.

I retired and went to the united states postal service and used veterans preference its 10 points and they start at $15.75 an hour you can get the reference test at the library for free instead of the $99 they try to charge at a job search its an easy test worked for almost twenty years and left at $29,68 an hour

Apply for anything and everything you might possibly want to do. Don't limit yourself.
If it's applicable, don't voluntarily supply information that could be viewed negatively by unaware civilians. TBI and PTSD means the same thing to most non-veteran civilians: potential mass murderer in the workplace.

LinkedIn is great for networking, and USA Jobs is great for openings. Nothing really beats the old-fashioned "figure out what you what to do, find someone that needs you, apply and interview" tactic either.

SrA Hagler, The most resent updates and job fairs that I found are at the army transition center (ACAP) office. Go to the nearest military base and request to be put on there distribution list you are entitled to this for six months to a year of transitioning from the military. Every time companies are looking for veterans and their spouse they send to transition office all federal positions, jobs overseas and all over the US. Sometimes you will get two or three emails a week and a list of job fairs. Indeed.com works best for finding a temporary job, but unfortunately boots on the ground to find a better paying job is still the only way to progress. The better paying jobs don't have a high turn over rate, so they don't need search engines online to find the next employee. Hope that makes sense. Focus on saving every dollar, get to know people at a potential employer, and get an education even if that means a technical degree.

I would advise you to look at the company websites. If you look onion boards, the currency of the postings is dependent on how active the company is at maintaining thier postings.

This site is definitely a good place to start. I'd then recommend Linked In and Twiitter. I'm on Linked In - look me up - I have about 5,000 connections. One of them is bound to bound to be in a position to say "yes"

Start with a Linkedin.com account. Make sure to add your Linkedin URL to your resume. As for job searching sites, I prefer Indeed, Careerbuilder, and Monster. You might try USAJobs, but I never had any luck on that site.

SrA Joshua Hagler, Last week I bought a new cell phone from ATT, in the literature ATT was promoting their program of employing Veterans. Also, I found going to college at night to be a very good place for Networking. Good Luck.
