Since I am looking for work, While I was filling out applications online one of the questions I was asked is "Am I a protected Veteran?" In the definitions section it mentions an Armed Forces Service Medal (AFSM). I had never heard of it so I was wondering what it was and was I qualified for it.

PO2 Brian Rhodes, The Armed Forces Service Medal is awarded to active service members who serve in a "significant activity" and do not encounter armed opposition or imminent danger. It was created on Jan. 11, 1996, under President Bill Clinton.

To qualify for the medal, military personnel must be members of a unit that participates with the operation inside the area of eligibility for at least one day. Theater commanders decide whether an operation meets the criteria for the medal. The medal depicts a torch similar to the Statue of Liberty's on the obverse side. On the reserve side is an eagle, adapted from the seal of the Department of Defense.

I received one for peace keeping operations in Macedonia (TF Able Sentry) while the mission was under the UN. It is a campaign medal for missions where there is no campaign medal. I'm sure there is a way more offical description of it, but it's basically a generic campaign medal.

Do a search for AR 600-8-22 "Military Awards" for qualifying missions or operations. It's in a pdf file.
