Does military service exacerbate a troubling background one has as a youth?

Sgt Spencer Sikder The event of his brother's death for which he was not responsible but may have felt survivors guilt and the events he experienced during deployment are separate. When I read your question I thought I was going to be reading about a youth who had been in trouble and had a difficult family life. This not the case. He could well have had a PTSD event but I don't think you can connect the fact that he received 18 years for shooting at police to the event of his brother's death via a single driver single car accident.

I often mused that many soldiers are running to or away from something, or both.

In this case the military straightened Eisenhauer out and he turned his life around. Then the PTSD coupled with the military's failure to give him proper treatment or involuntary commitment until he improved combined to undo this once-good soldier.

This is a failure of the Army and the VA to do their jobs to help a soldier crippled by war.
