I have asked my unit, retention and so forth for answers and no one seems to know exactly. Can anyone help me with the following?

I am currently stationed in Hawaii. I reclassed to 68w and due to go to Fort Sam Houston in May 2014 for AIT. My questions is...

What will happen with my family while I am at training? Will they remain in Hawaii until my training is complete?

If so, Will I return to Hawaii after training to ship household good, car, and etc... after training or will I need a POA to do this for me?

Also, do I need a levy briefing to receive orders to go to AIT? My retention SGT said I need to go to a levy briefing, but when I requested a levy briefing I was told by my S1 I could not get a levy briefing until I am on assignment.

I know a lot of questions but none of these crazies seem to know the answers or I just get tossed from person to person.

The following comments are general in nature, and I recommend that you follow up this advice by taking it to your chain of command, in particular, your 1sgt : a)  Normally, if you are going somewhere that requires you to be gone more than 180 days (6 months) you will be required to PCS IOT complete that assignment.  Regularly, this allows you to bring your family and your things with you as long as your gaining station allows it.  If PCS is not required, you will be on TDY status, and your family will stay where they are and carry on in your absence. b) Once you have completed your training, you will get a follow on assignment to your next duty station.  It may take you back to Schofield Barracks, or it may take you elsewhere.  If you are on TDY status, you will return to your duty station and either process out to PCS to your new duty station with your family while on Permissive TDY/PCS leave, or you will report to your new unit in Hawaii and go home for a cup of coffee/beer/what have you.  If you have PCSed to Sam Houston for training and brought your family, you will PCS to your follow on duty station from there.  If you're training assignment does not require a PCS move, I see no reason for a levy brief, however, if you have one available to attend, I would attend it, as there are normally the right people available on site to answer any questions that you may have.

I hope this is relevant and helps you.

Thank you MSG, My schooling is only 18 weeks so my family would not be going with me. As far as coming back to Hawaii as a duty station I really hope not. I did put in request for a duty station on the mainland but if it gets approved or not is yet to be determined upon graduation. I just want to make sure my family has what they need while I am away and after graduation to join me at new duty station without to much hassle. Thank you for your input it did answer some questions.

Just to be clear, you're speaking with a (Battalion or higher) Career Counselor (PMOS 79S) and not a Unit Retention NCO (MOS immaterial).

Because your training is less than 20-weeks (you can PCS with family with 20-week or longer training), you'll have a choice...leave your family put or have the military move them to your follow-on assignment.

Soldiers who reenlisted under Option 3 for any training (to include ASI/SQI) of less than 20 weeks should have a follow-on assignment NLT 120 days prior to the start of training.  Training follow on assignments are based on the needs of the Army and changes will not be entertained except for extreme cases. No changes to follow on assignments will be entertained once the Soldier is within 45 days of training start date.

Have your Career Counselor look at RMT Message 14-23, Training Follow-On Procedures, for specific guidance.

A lot is dependent on how long your AIT will be. Your best course of action at this point will be to contact the school house at Fort Sam as they will have the best and latest information for you.

Family sep pay is another entitlement, and there are others as well. It will all depend on what status she travels in.

The website says you are entitled to FSA if you are TDY greater than 30 days without your family.  That would apply here.
