Does re-enlisting in the reserves replace the IRR 2-year time obligation?

I enlisted into the Selected Reserve for 6 years with 2 years in the IRR (full 8). I am approaching the end of the 6 years being in the Selected Reserve. If I chose to extend/re-enlist for 2 years in the Selected Reserve, would that eliminate the 2-year obligation of being in the IRR? Or would those 2 IRR years still be required after doing a full 8 years in the Selected Reserve?

Yes, unless your contract explicitly states otherwise.

If you re-enlist to serve 8 years in the Active Reserves, then your 2 year IRR obligation is waived.

Short answer: Yes.

When you are first appointed the military you incur an eight year Military Service Obligation (MSO)* which is the total amount of required service performed in any of the services or components.

It did when I was in. I did the 6-2 option but reenlisted for 3 at my 6 year mark. So I did 9 total and no IRR time.

The short answer is "YES" it counts.
The additional two years in the Selected Reserve will count towards your total 8-year service obligation! ( No additional IRR time is required after you have met your total 8-year commitment. )
