Does the 101st do the same thing as infantry nowadays and are they in Afghanistan right now?

i don't think the 101st does anything the Marines don't do.

rappel out of helicopters? check
walk? check
vertical envelopment? check
walk some more? check

let's not forget the Marines have their own air force. (checkmate)

Here is a big distinction between the 101st and other Infantry type divisions: If it doesn't fit in, or get slung under a helicopter, the 101st does not have it.
The idea is that every single Soldier and mobile equipment is Air Mobile through Army Aviation assets.
*The deployment situation requires armored vehicles due to IEDs being so common place and has caused the 101st to adopt a slightly armored approach so the above is idealistic and not a complete reality due to current war time needs.

1. AIR Assault Infantry Division- hate to break it to you but yes, they are Infantry (light). Check the Army Times- they 82nd Abn Div, 1th Mtn Div get shuttled around all the time.

I been in the 101st for 2 years and have not deployed. We are a major Infantry installation and yes we are light infantry. If you go,remember the name Eagle Flight lol might provide the toughest training for you as a soldier. It’s the best experience I’ll never want to experience again to say the least lol
