I’m looking at going to Hawai‘i in June. I’ve heard horror stories about wait lists being months long and soldiers having to wait in a hotel until until housing became available. Does the army foot that bill or am I expected to pay out the you know what to to stay in a hotel while we wait for a home to open up? Thank you.

Wait list for on post/on base housing is not that long, because most people here prefer off post due to BAH..... now TLA reimbursement is the same anywhere when you're on PCS mode

Fly to Oahu; trust your Sponsor to guide you well and ensure he takes you to Housing first. I lived on Schofield Barracks and later, moved off-baseball; both are equally great experiences, it all depends on your liking and your family. Thanks.

SSG Daniel Deiler - A recce of your new home; playground is sublime in my mind, cause, generally, sponsors are caught up in their own worlds that they miss telling you about things that are most important to you, individually. Hats-off Staff Sergeant for being an independent Sponsor.

SSG Daniel Deiler - I had a sponsor when I went to Schofield. They didn't show up at the airport, leaving me and the family stranded to our own luck. Fortunately I had already booked TLA housing and called a cab. Then rented a dent until my car showed up. After I reported to my unit, I thanked my 'sponsor' for their kind assistance.

Hey Dan; if you hadn't booked TLA prior to your arrival at PCS, I would have assumed you were an inexperienced non-comm, Brother. If you hadn't thanked that sponsor on reporting to the Unit, I would say you missed a great opportunity. I agree with your approach, it does make a difference.

I had a guy meet me at the airport. That was Navy in 1983. He helped me get settled the first few weeks I was there. Of course I also worked side by side with him.

You’re authorized TLA while waiting for housing and it’s paid back in 10 day increments; every 10 days you’ll take your zero balance receipt to Housing Services Office and they’ll give you the memo you need to file for reimbursement with finance. It’s a very easy and smooth process.

Do you have your GTCC?

This. Just make sure you find a TLA authorized hotel near your duty station. Everything here may seem close by distance wise, but with traffic a 15 mile difference can become an hour commute.
