They participated in the Civil War on both sides in 1862, and my own Grandfather fought in the Spanish/American war of 1898. Various Uncles from both parents fought in WWI in 1915. My Father and various uncles went to WWII and several went on to fight in the Korean war. My Brother and I fought in Vietnam, and I went on to fight in Panama. I later went to Bosnia in 1995 then served two tours of duty in the Middle East as part of Multinational Peacekeeping force and as liaison in Tel Aviv. I served in various short-term assignments within Central and South America before retiring from service in 1989. My Son has taken the shield of Freedom until his son is grown and hopefully does the same thereby continuing our family military linage and service to our beloved country. My father was an Army Dental Corps officer, maternal grandfather an Army Signal Corps NCO, great-uncles in WWII Navy (pacific) and Cold War USAF. Family fought in the Civil War (both sides), not sure about WWI (need to research), Revolution, colonization's here and there, couple fought in the Scottish Wars of Independence, 100 years war, some fighting in Germany and France during medieval period. So a history, yes, but not a tradition and (at least during post Revolution history) not career.
